WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP. This township had a population in 1870 of 1,312, and originally belonged to the southern or Jefferson part of the county, and its history, and that of the principal families are closely connected with the histories of prominent settlers in Madison and Jefferson. It is a square township, of evenly timbered land. The Clear Fork of the Mohican runs through a part of the southwest corner of the township. The pleasant village of Washington is the principal point, but it appears that population is being attracted away from the township by a comparison of the census returns of 1860-70, the loss being 485 in population during the ten years.
