Five Golden Anniversaries

Mr. and Mrs. Daniel S. Hoover - Wedded Half Century Ago - Today is the golden wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel S. Hoover of 252 West Fourth street, who were united in marriage in this city Nov. 28, 1867, the ceremony having been performed at the home of the bride's father on North Diamond street, by the Rev. M. J. Firey, then pastor of the First Lutheran church.  Prior to her marriage Mrs. Hoover was Miss Mary Anderson.  She was born Dec. 14, 1840.  Mr. Hoover was born on a farm near Chambersburg, Pa., Jan. 27, 1839.  His boyhood was spent of the farm and he continued in that occupation until coming to Ohio, when he learned the trade of cabinet making.  In 1861 he enlisted in the Sixth Ohio battery and continued in the service for four years.  He then returned to Mansfield and later lost his left arm while in the employ of the Ford planing mill.  Afterward he engaged in the fire insurance business and also served as constable for a number of years.  On Jan. 1 of this year he retired from the insurance business disposing of his business to D. S. Koontz.  During his many years of residence in Mansfield Mr. Hoover has gained a wide acquaintanceship and made many friends, both he and Mrs. Hoover being held in the highest esteem by all who know them.  They have one son, William.  [THE MANSFIELD NEWS: Wednesday, November 28, 1917; Page 3]
 
Mr. and Mrs. John C. Hull - Golden Wedding  - Wednesday, Jan. 24, was the fiftieth anniversary of the marriage of Miss Sarah F. Leppo to John C. Hull, and it was celebrated at their beautiful country home, three miles southeast of Mansfield on the Mansfield-Lucas road.  Mr. and Mrs. Hull have lived in Richland county during their entire lives.  Mr. Hull is 72 years old and was a soldier in the Civil war.  Mrs. Hull will be 72 years old on Feb. 5.  To this union have been born seven children:  Mrs. Ferry Byerly, deceased; Mrs. Eva A. Hendricks and Owen L. Hull, living on the home farm; the Rev. John D. Hull, minister of the Portland, Ind., church of Christ; Mrs. Arthur Leiter, Lucas; Prof. Asa M. Hull, singing evangelist residing with his parents; Rev. O. L. Hull, preaching and attending Columbia university, New York City.  The celebration occupied the entire day with a large number of friends entertained at a twelve o'clock luncheon, and another concourse of friends and neighbors at a seven o'clock dinner.  Mr. and Mrs. Hull received a number of valuable and useful presents.  The house was tastefully decorated with flowers and ribbon carrying out the golden color scheme.  Vocal and instrumental music was furnished by Asa M. Hull and their granddaughter, Ethel Byerly.  Mr. and Mrs. Hull have been members of the Church of Christ for almost fifty years.  The day will be one long to be remembered by the family and attending guests which were 81 during the day.  [THE MANSFIELD NEWS: Saturday, January 27, 1917; Page 3]
 
 
Mr. and Mrs. John Irvin - Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Celebrate Golden Wedding - Mr. and Mrs. John Irvin, 70 Poplar street, quietly celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Christmas day.  The entire family was present at this gathering with the exception of the eldest son, Durling, who is ill in a hospital at Edmunton, Alberta, Can., where he recently underwent an operation.  Mr. and Mrs. Irvin received as gifts many bouquets of lovely flowers and remembrances in gold.  Friends called during the day and among this number were Mr. and Mrs. Homer Eddy, Mr. Eddy's father having solemnized the ceremony of fifty years ago. Mrs. Irvin was born in 1850, in Wayne county, and Mr. Irvin in 1846, one mile west of Perrysville.  The guests in attendance were Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Linn of Chicago, R. Lowell Irvin of Tulsa, Okla., Mr. and Mrs. H. W. Hidebrand and daughter Miss Faye Chapin of Shelby, Mr. and Mrs. A. D. Westcott of Jamestown, N. Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius W. Linn - Golden Wedding Is Quietly Celebrated - The fiftieth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius W. Linn, Newman street, is being quietly celebrated today at their home with their children and grandchildren.  Mr. and Mrs. Linn have always been residents of Mansfield.  Mrs. Linn being formerly Miss Katherine Tingley, was born and raised on the reformatory farm.  Mr. Linn is a veteran of the Civil war and was later weight inspector for the various railroads, retiring about four years ago on account of ill health.  Mr. and Mrs. Linn are the parents of six children, while ten grandchildren are also present at the celebration today.  The children are Mrs. C. Doerman, Charles, Willis B. and Clinton Linn, all of Mansfield, and Harry Linn of Loudonville, and Mrs. J. Christianey of Warren.  [THE MANSFIELD NEWS: Wednesday, March 21, 1917; Page 10]
 
 
Mr. and Mrs. Alvon Sheets - GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARY - Parents of Mansfield Business Man Celebrate Event at Ashland - Mr. and Mrs. Alvon Sheets, parents of William P. Sheets, well known Mansfield business man, celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at their home in Ashland, Monday.  The couple were married at the home of Mrs. sheets in Savannah on May 21, 1867, and immediately after their marriage went to Ashland where they have made their home ever since.  To assist in celebrating the anniversary, the sons, William, of Mansfield, and O. D. Sheets of Youngstown, and their families, were present for the occasion.  A trip was made by the family to places of interest in the section where the early years of their life was spent.  A gold jewel case with $75 in gold was the gift of the sons to their father and mother.  Mr. and Mrs. Sheets will continue to live at home in quiet retirement, Mr. Sheets having given up his business as traveling salesman after many years of successful endeavor.
