Assorted Asylum Admissions

ANDERSON	[Ohio Liberal: 26 September 1883]	James Anderson, a son of Charles Anderson, of Butler Township, was brought home from the insane asylum at Columbus several weeks ago under the supposition that he was entirely cured. Since his return, however, he has developed unmistakable signs of returning insanity and having exhibited a tendency to violence, a report to that effect was made to Probate Judge McCoy on Monday afternoon, and he will probably be returned to the asylum.
ANTRICAN	[Mansfield Shield: 03 February 2013]	Elsie Antrican, who resides in this city, was adjudged insane and ordered taken to Toledo by Judge Cummins in probate court Saturday.
BALLIET	[Richland Shield & Banner: 04 February 1893]	Tuesday. Sheriff Tressel, this morning took David Balliet, of Mifflin tp., to the Toledo Asylum, Judge Brucker having adjudged him insane yesterday afternoon.
BALLIETT	[Semi-Weekly News: 01 October 1897, Vol. 13, No. 79]	David L. Balliett, who resides near Butler, was arrested Tuesday morning at the instance of his wife, adjudged insane in probate court and taken to the Toledo hospital that afternoon.
BALLIETT	[Mansfield News: 29 May 1901, Vol. 17, No. 76]	Sheriff Pulver took David L. Balliett to the Toledo asylum for the insane this afternoon.
BARR	[Richland Shield & Banner: 19 March 1892]	Wednesday. The relatives of David Barr, the incurable brought from the Toledo asylum by Sheriff Tressel, Monday night, did not call at the jail for him yesterday. Barr's condition is deplorable in the extreme. He seems to know nothing whatever and when spoken to replies in brutal grunts. He is also very filthy and an undesirable charge. Having lost both legs some years ago, he demands attention during the entire time. He is a native of Troy township.
BEAL	[Richland Shield & Banner: 25 March 1893]	Saturday. Mary Beal, of Bellville, this afternoon filed application in probate court to hold an inquest of lunacy on her husband Asa Beal. The complainant says Beal has been a hard drinker for some time, which has unbalanced his mind to such an extent that he threatens to kill his family. Beal will be given a hearing Monday.
BILLOW	[Richland Shield & Banner: 25 February 1893]	This forenoon D.C. Billow, who for a number of years was editor of the Crestline Advocate, was brought over from his home in Galion (OH) and was taken before Judge Tobias for examination as to his sanity. The judge was fully satisfied after asking a few questions that Mr. Billow was mentally unbalanced and accordingly pronounced him insane. This afternoon Sheriff Birk, accompanied by Dr. Clutter of Crestline, and an uncle of Mr. Billow's, took the patient to the asylum at Toledo (OH). Mr. Billow is suffering from fatal paresis, of softening of the brain, and it is only a question of time until his physical strength will succumb. He has been in ill health for about four years and he in vain sought relief. One year ago he passed through a long period of illness which nearly terminated fatally, and since then his mind has been gradually weakening. He reached such a condition at last that he would get lost evening in sight of his own home, and the committing of him to an asylum became necessary. his delusions are few and at all times he is harmless and good natured, recognizing and greeting friends as usual. He imagines one day he is very wealthy and wishes in engage in large speculations, and again he thinks that he is very poor. His case is a sad one. He is a comparatively young man, in the prime of life and was full of promise. That his fate is to be consigned to a living death is a source of the deepest regret, among his many friends. BOALS	[Richland Shield & Banner: 09 July 1892]	Saturday. On Tuesday, Mrs. Mary Boals, of Sharon Township, who has been confined in the Toledo Asylum will be returned to the institution, her malady having again made its appearance.
BOWESMITH	[Ohio Liberal: 23 January 1878]	Dr. J.G. Bowesmith has been adjudged insane by the Probate Court, and he will be taken to one of the asylum of the State within a few days.
BRANNAN	[Semi-Weekly News: 12 November 1897, Vol. 13, No. 91]	Sheriff Boals took Kate Brannan to the Toledo hospital for the insane Wednesday afternoon.
BREHM	[Richland Shield & Banner: 25 June 1892]	Tuesday. The Probate Judge this morning received notification that Jacob Brehm, recently adjudged insane, will be admitted to the Toledo Asylum. Mrs. Mary Boals of Springfield Township, who was sent home several months ago, will also be returned to the institution.
"	[Richland Shield & Banner: 25 June 1892]	Friday. Jacob Brehm, of East Third Street, was adjudged insane in Probate Court this forenoon. Brehm's insanity, although of a mild nature, is of long standing. Application will be made for his admission to the Toledo asylum.
BRUBAKER	[Ohio Liberal: 19 February 1879]	Sheriff Ritchie took Mary Brubaker to the Columbus Insane Asylum last Monday. Richland County has now about forty-four inmates in this Asylum.
CAMPBELL	[Ohio Liberal: 03 October 1883]	Margaret Campbell, an old lady of East Diamond Street (Mansfield), was taken to the Insane Asylum at Columbus (Ohio) last Thursday.
CARL	Mansfield News: 19 July 1901, Vol. 17, No. 118	An affidavit has been filed in probate court charging Hannah Carl, a resident of Shiloh, with being insane. It is stated that the woman is 60 years of age and some years years ago she was taken to the Richland Co. infirmary, but made her escape from the institution. Judge Brinkerhoff has notified the infirmary directors of the matter and she may be removed directly to that institution without the formality of an inquest,
CHARLES	[Semi-Weekly News: 29 June 1897, Vol. 13, No. 52]	Elijah Charles, of Pavonia, who was arrested for insanity, has been tearing everything to pieces in his room at the county jail. An inquest of lunacy was held and Judge Brinkerhoff pronounced the prisoner insane. Charles was removed to the Toledo hospital Friday.
COLES	[Mansfield Herald: 07 February 1889]	Jesse Coles will be taken to the Toledo Asylum today by Sheriff Flannery.
COLLINS	[Mansfield News: 05 July 1901, Vol. 17, No. 106]	An insanity has been filed in probate court against Mrs. Grace Collins, who has been taking treatment at Dr. C.E. Sawyer's sanatorium at Marion. She has been adjudged insane and will be taken to Toledo hospital.
CONSTANCE	[Richland Shield & Banner: 12 March 1892]	Yesterday a warrant was issued by Judge Brucker for the arrest of Will Constance, a young man living with his parents on Sherman Avenue on the charge of insanity. Sheriff Tressel, after considerable trouble, effected Constance's arrest last night and placed him under restraint. Young Constance's mind became unbalanced during the recent revivals held in the Congregational church by Evangelists Reed and Chafer, and his hallucination has been that he has been called to preach. On last Sunday at the meeting of the Y.M.C.A., he created a disturbance by insisting on making a long talk and the meeting was adjourned. The young man then began preaching at the corner of Park Avenue West and Walnut Street. Within the last few days he has given evidence of violence and it was considered advisable to place him in a retreat. An inquest of lunacy was held on young Constance at 2 o'clock this afternoon. After hearing the evidence of Revs. Hubbell and Wiles, with regard to the boy's hallucination, the prisoner was adjudged insane and application will be made for his admission to the Toledo asylum.
CRABBS	[Richland Shield & Banner: 19 December 1891]	Monday. In probate court this forenoon John S. Crabbs was adjudged an imbecile. A guardian will be appointed for him.
CRAWFORD KUYKENDALL	[Semi-Weekly News: 12 March 1897, Vol. 13, No. 21]	Lillie Crawford and Emily Kykendall [sic.] have been adjudged insane in probate court. Deputy Sheriff George Gregg took Lillie Crawford to the Toledo Asylum Monday.
CUMMINGS	[Richland Shield & Banner: 09 July 1892]	Wednesday. Sheriff Tressel last night brought Mrs. Laura C. Cummings, in incurable, from the Toledo Asylum. She will be taken to the county infirmary today.
DICE	[Mansfield Herald: 16 December 1886]	Perry Dice, an inmate of the Richland County infirmary, has become a raving maniac. An application will be made to send him to the asylum at Columbus.
DICKERSON	[Richland Shield & Banner: 09 April 1892, Vol. XXIV, No. 46]	Saturday. Miss Jennie Dickerson, of Shelby, was adjudged insane by Judge Brucker this forenoon. Application will be made for her admission to the Toledo Asylum.
DICKHART	[Mansfield News: 17 July 1899]	Sheriff Boals arrested Mrs. Edith Dickhart this morning at her home on Wood Street on an affidavit made out in probate court charging her with being insane. She was taken to he county jail.
DICKHART	[Mansfield News: 24 July 1899]	Sheriff Boals took Mrs. Edith Dickhart to the Toledo hospital for the insane Sunday.
DILTS	[Mansfield News: 04 May 1899]	John Dilts, who was postmaster at Butler for 26 years, dating from 1864 to 1884, was declared insane last week. Mr. Dilts is 73 years of age.
DOBBS	[Mansfield News: 04 August 1899]	In probate court an affidavit of insanity was filed Thursday against David Dobbs, of South Sugar Street. Dobbs is a teamster and the first attack which he had was three years ago, it is states. The cause of his derangement is supposed to be financial troubles. As stated in Thursday's News he attempted to kill himself early in the afternoon by striking himself on the head with a dull hatchet. It is also claimed that on one occasion he pursued his wife with malicious intentions. His insanity it is claimed, has been of a periodical nature. The hearing of the case was set for this morning at 10 o'clock before Judge Brinkerhoff.
"	[Mansfield News: 05 August 1899]	David A. Dobbs, against whom an affidavit of insanity was filed in probate court, had his hearing today before Judge Brinkerhoff and was adjudged insane.
DOCKSTINE	[Richland Shield & Banner: 26 November 1892]	Wednesday. Jacob Dockstine, a former resident of this city, but who was sent to the Toledo Asylum from Ashland County, was released from that institution and will remain in this city.
DORIAN	[Richland Shield & Banner: 22 July 1893]	Saturday. An inquest of lunacy was held on the person of John Dorian in Probate court this morning. The prisoner was not brought into court for the reason that he is very hard to handle. He was adjudged insane and will be taken to the Toledo asylum soon as possible.

EGGERMAN	[Richland Shield & Banner: 29 October 1892]	Tuesday. Sheriff Tressel this morning took Mrs. E.M. Mills, of South Hedges Street, and Mrs. Emma Eggerman, of Jefferson Twp., to the Toledo asylum.
"	[Richland Shield & Banner: 29 October 1892]	Friday. Mrs. Emma Eggerman, of Jefferson Township, was adjudged insane in Probate court this forenoon and application will be made for her admission to the Toledo asylum. The unfortunate woman is very crazy and told the sheriff that she knew what the officers wanted with her, viz. to hang her for killing a child. At the jail, after the inquest, she struggled hard and long with the sheriff, bruising him considerable by several hard blows about the body.
EMPTAGE	[Richland Shield & Banner: 22 July 1893]	An inquest of lunacy was held upon the person of John D. Emptage, of North Diamond Street, in Probate Court this morning. After taking testimony in the case Judge Brinkerhoff declared the prisoner insane. Mr. Emptage is a moulder and has been in the employ of the Eclipse Stove Works for some time past. Several years ago the unfortunate man began to develop signs of insanity. He was given medical treatment and partially recovered the use of his faculties. Some weeks ago the man was severely burned while handling molten metal at the Eclipse shops. During his period of enforced idleness Mr. Emptage's former symptoms of an unbalanced mind again came upon him. He grew rapidly worse and complaint was made to the authorities with the result noted above. The afflicted man lies upon the bed all day long and when any one addresses him he answers with motions of the hands. Mr. Emptage is a prominent member of several secret societies, including the Knights of the Golden Eagle, Jr. O.U.A.M., Knights of Honor and Nations union, and is an honest and industrious man. His wife and one child have the sympathy of many friends in their affliction. Mr. Emptage was taken to the Toledo asylum at noon by Sheriff Guthrie.
FARRINGTON	[Mansfield Herald: 30 September 1886]	The inquest of lunacy in the came of Mrs. Ann Farrington, who was alleged insane by her husband, Abraham Farrington, was continued by the probate court until Friday morning at 10 o'clock, to afford the couple an opportunity for settlement.
FENNER	[Mansfield Herald: 16 May 1889]	Judge Mack declared Clara Fenner insane and she will be sent to the Toledo Asylum.
FITGER	[Mansfield News: 10 August 1901, Vol. 17, No. 137]	Peter Fitger, a well known citizen of Mansfield, has been adjudged insane, the inquest of insanity having been held before Judge Brinkerhoff in probate court Friday afternoon. He will be taken to the state hospital for the insane at Toledo.
FITZ	[Richland Shield & Banner: 26 March 1892]	Friday. A warrant was issued in Probate Court this forenoon for the arrest of Mrs. Samantha Fitz on the charge of insanity. Mrs. Fitz was adjudged insane about two years ago, was sent to the Toledo Asylum and was discharged from there as cured in a short time. Latterly, however, her malady has returned.
"	[Richland Shield & Banner: 02 April 1892]	Friday. Sheriff Tressel took Mrs. Samantha Fitz to the Toledo asylum this afternoon.
"	[Richland Shield & Banner: 05 November 1892]	Monday. Application was made in Probate Court this morning for an inquest of lunacy to be held on the person of Mrs. Aaron Fitz, of Madison Township.
FORD	[Mansfield Herald: 28 October 1886]	The inquest of lunacy to be held in the case of Thomas Ford was dismissed.
GROSS	[Mansfield (OH) Daily Shield: 22 February 1909]	Mrs. Katherine Gross was taken to the Toledo State Hospital Saturday by Sheriff Baer. Mrs. Gross raised a big row upon her arrest but she gave the sheriff no trouble on being taken to Toledo.
GUTEKUNST	[Semi-Weekly News: 07 December 1897, Vol. 13, No. 98]	The divorce case of Christena Gutekunst vs. Martin Gutekunst was heard before Judge Wolfe in common pleas court. Henry & Reed were the attorneys for the plaintiff. The defendant is at present serving a term in the Canton (OH) workhouse for drunkenness and bad conduct. Judge Wolfe gave the plaintiff a divorce and the custody of the two minor children, Catharine and William. The family homestead was awarded to the wife and $500 additional as alimony and for attorney fees.
GUTHRIE	[Richland Shield & Banner: 13 August 1892]	Sunday. In Probate court yesterday afternoon, Mrs. Mary Guthrie was adjudged an imbecile and A.B. Guthrie was appointed her guardian.
HAGERMAN	[Ohio Liberal: 15 January 1879]	Application for admission to the Columbus Insane Asylum has been made for Mrs. Hagerman. The loss of a mother, which occurred a short time ago, has so prayed upon the lady that she has lost her mind entirely, and is now a raving maniac.
HEISERMAN	[Mansfield Herald: 02 May 1889]	Phillip Heiserman was taken to the Toledo insane asylum by Sheriff Flannery Thursday.
HELDENBRAND	Semi-Weekly News: 24 December 1897, Vol. 13, No. 103	In probate court W. Heldenbrand, aged 22 years, a resident of Bunker Hill, has been adjudged insane, Heldenbrand will be removed to the Toledo hospital by the sheriff some day this week.
HILDEBRAND	Mansfield News: 18 July 1901, Vol. 17, No. 117	An inquest of lunacy was held in probate court by Judge Brinkerhoff in the case of Winfield Hildebrand, of Washington Township. The patient is about 26 years of age and has been residing with his parents in Washington Township. The affidavit was made by Dr. Eli Stofer and the man was declared insane. The patient is not yet under arrest, but will probably be taken into custody today or tomorrow.
HOSDOWICH	[Mansfield Herald: 08 April 1886]	Application has been made for the admission of Joe Hosdowich to the Columbus asylum for the insane.
HUGHES	[Ohio Liberal: 29 August 1877]	On Monday last Sarah Hughes was adjudged insane by the Probate Court and application has been made for her admission to the asylum.
KASTONOWITZ	[Richland Shield & Banner: 24 October 1891]	Thursday. Jacob Kastonowitz, residing on the Olivesburg Road in Newman's Addition, was arrested by Sheriff Tressel this afternoon upon the charge of being insane. An inquest of lunacy will be held upon him tomorrow at 10 o'clock a.m. Our readers are familiar with the circumstances of the trouble between this fellow and Miss Wise. Since his release Saturday night Kastonowitz has been threatening Miss Wise. Sunday. Jacob Kastonowitz, who was arrested Friday evening upon the complaint of Miss Phoebe Wise, was released last evening, the complainant failing to appear against him.
"	Richland Shield & Banner: 31 October 1891	Wednesday. Sheriff Tressel took Jacob Kastonowitz to the Toledo Asylum this forenoon. Kastonowitz is the party who has been molesting Miss Phoebe Wise, who resides on the Olivesburg Road. Friday. Jacob Kastonowitz was adjudged insane in Probate Court this forenoon. He will be sent to the Toledo asylum.
"	[Richland Shield & Banner: 02 January 1892]	Wednesday. Judge Brucker received the information this morning from the superintendent of the Toledo insane asylum that Jacob Kastonowitz, who was sent up from this county, had escaped from the institution last Monday. It will be remembered by our readers that Kastonowitz, whose parents live in the northeastern part of the city, continually annoyed Miss Phoebe Wise with his attentions. Miss Wise had him arrested and in Police court he gave bond to keep the peace. After being released he continued his unwelcome visits to Miss Wise and she preferred the charge of insanity against him. He is about due for this city and the officers have been instructed to maintain a sharp lookout for him.
"	[Richland Shield & Banner: 09 January 1892]	Saturday. Jacob Kastonowitz who escaped from the Toledo Asylum Monday, was rearrested here yesterday and lodged in the county jail. He will be taken back to Toledo this evening.
"	[Richland Shield & Banner: 06 February 1892]	Thursday. Judge Brucker this morning received notification from the superintendent of the Toledo Asylum that Jacob Kastonowitz, an inmate from this county, had been permitted to return home on a trial visit. Kastonowitz was sent up from this county on complaint of Miss Phoebe Wise.
"	[Richland Shield & Banner: 26 March 1892]	Wednesday. Jacob Kastonowitz, who was placed in the city prison yesterday upon complaint of his father, was taken to the county jail last evening, his father having preferred the charge of insanity against him. Kastonowitz has already been confined in the Toledo Asylum, when he was charged with molesting Miss Phoebe Wise. He will have a hearing today.
"	[Richland Shield & Banner: 21 May 1892]	Thursday. Judge Brucker this forenoon discharged Jacob Kastonowitz, who was arrested Sunday on the charge of insanity.
"	[Richland Shield & Banner: 21 May 1892]	Monday. Jacob Kastonowitz, for whom a warrant was issued in Probate Court Friday evening on the charge of insanity, preferred by Miss Phoebe Wise, was arrested by Deputy Sheriff Robinson yesterday. Kastonowitz, at the time of his arrest, was attending services at the Swiss church, corner of South Diamond and East Second Streets. he will have his hearing Thursday forenoon.
KAUFMAN	[Mansfield Herald: 18 November 1886]	Benjamin Kaufman, who has been in jail several days, was taken to the infirmary. He is incurably insane.
KENNEDY	[Richland Shield & Banner: 03 December 1892]	Monday. In Probate Court this afternoon, Horace D. Kennedy, filed bond of $8,100 and was appointed guardian of his mother, Mrs. Esther A. Kennedy, an insane person at present in the Toledo Asylum.
KUHLBURGER	[Mansfield Shield: 27 January 1913]	Angelina Kuhlburger, 40, Mansfield, was declared to be insane by the probate court Monday morning and will be taken to the Toledo state hospital for treatment. Drs. Burns and Remy made the examination into the woman's mental condition.
KUNEMAN	[Mansfield News: 26 May 1899]	Edward Kuneman, who was sent to the Toledo hospital for the insane some time ago and subsequently returned to this city improved in condition, will be taken back to the institution this afternoon by Sheriff Boals.
KUYKENDALL	[Semi-Weekly News: 12 March 1897, Vol. 13, No. 21]	Deputy Sheriff George Gregg took Emily Kuykendall to the Toledo Asylum, Wednesday afternoon.
LASER	[Mansfield News: 21 May 1901, Vol. 17, No. 69]	Webb Laser, son of Dan Laser, of Ganges, has become insane and will be taken to Toledo. He married a daughter of Dr. Clowes, of Shiloh, but she secured a divorce from him some months ago.
LERSCH	[Mansfield News: 25 July 1901, Vol. 17, No. 123]	Sheriff Barney Bulver took Henry Lersch back to the state hospital at Toledo this morning. Mr. Lersch was formerly a patient at the hospital but became better and was allowed to return home. He is now worse and it was thought best to have him taken back.
MARSTON	[Richland Shield & Banner: 19 September 1891, Vol. LXXIV, No. 17]	Saturday. Miss Ella Marston, aged about 35 years, who has been residing with the family of A.B. Race, south of the city for some time, was adjudged insane in Probate court this forenoon. Application will be made for her admission to the Toledo asylum.
"	[Richland Shield & Banner: 26 September 1891, Vol. LXXIV, No. 18]	Saturday. Sheriff Tressel took Miss Ella Marston to the Toledo Asylum yesterday.
MASSA	[Mansfield News: 21 May 1901, Vol. 17, No. 69]	Mrs. Louisa Massa, of this city, was adjudged insane in probate court Monday by Judge Brinkerhoff and ordered taken to the Toledo hospital for the insane. The woman has been afflicted with the trouble for some time and has been in a private sanitarium at Marion, it is stated.
MAXWELL	[Richland Shield & Banner: 19 November 1892]	Thursday. James A. Maxwell, a prominent farmer living near Lexington, was adjudged insane in Probate court last evening and was taken to the Toledo Asylum today by Sheriff Tressel. Several weeks ago Mr. Maxwell had a lawsuit before a J.P. in Troy Township and argued his own case. The matter so affected his mind that he became violently insane.
McBRIDE	[Mansfield Herald: 10 June 1886]	Mrs. Emma J. McBride, wife of Wm. E. McBride, a son of Thomas McBride, attorney-at-law, was adjudged insane at an inquest held by Probate Judge Mack Thursday morning at 11 o'clock. Dr. J. Harvey Craig was the medical witness and his certificate states that her insanity is due to over exertion and worry and to debility from a recent continued illness. Her being at large is dangerous to herself and others and she is troubled with loss of memory, wanderings and instability. Elzie Johns, Margaret Johns and David Dillon were examined as witnesses. Application was made to have her admitted to the Columbus asylum.
McCRAY	[Ohio Liberal: 31 July 1878]	Sheriff Ritchie will take down to the Central Ohio Lunatic Asylum to-day, Frank P. Miller, Jane Swank and Richard McCray; the first from near Shenandoah and the latter two from the County Infirmary.
McELROY	Richland Shield & Banner: 15 November 1892	Friday. James P. McElroy made application yesterday in Probate Court for his release from the insane asylum by habeas corpus. He not only says he is not insane, but brings the references of the asylum authorities who allow him to come to to the city to do business for the institution, let him carry keys to some of the buildings and pay him wages for his work. He claims he was sent up from Richland County on a pretended commitment. -- reprinted from the Toledo (OH) News.
McMILLEN	[Richland Shield & Banner: 21 May 1892]	Tuesday. Alexander McMillen, of Weller Township, who attempted to hang himself several days ago, details of which appeared exclusively in the SHIELD at the time, was adjudged insane by Judge Brucker this forenoon. Application will be made for McMillen's admission to the Toledo asylum.
MECONI	[Mansfield News: 09 August 1899]	An affidavit of insanity was filed in probate court against Anastasio Meconi, a fruit dealer, aged 40 years, formerly of Marion. He had complained of severe pains in his head coming almost every night with paroxysms lasting two or three hours. It was claimed that he had made attempts to commit suicide. He was adjudged insane and application will be made to have him admitted at the Toledo hospital for the insane.
METCALF	[Mansfield News: 12 May 1899]	Insane -- Deputy Sheriff George Gregg went to Shelby this afternoon, from which place he will take Gilbert Metcalf to the Toledo hospital for the insane. Metcalf was recently declared insane by Judge Brinkerhoff.
MILLER	[Ohio Liberal: 31 July 1878]	Sheriff Ritchie will take down to the Central Ohio Lunatic Asylum to-day, Frank P. Miller, Jane Swank and Richard McCray; the first from near Shenandoah and the latter two from the County Infirmary.
MILLER	[Mansfield Herald: 05 August 1886]	Frank P. Miller, of Bloominggrove Township, was adjudged insane at an inquest of lunacy held before Judge Mack in the Probate Court office Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock. The affidavit alleging his insanity was sworn out on the 30th. of July by Cyrus Hatfield and J.M. Hunter. Dr. Mitchell Starr, Dr. D.R. Francis and G.B. Hackett were examined as witnesses. The medical certificate of Dr. Starr states that Miller is 33 years of age, a widower and farmer. He ad the first attack abotut eight years ago and for a while was under treatment at the Central Lunatic Asylum in Columbus. The supposed cause of his insanity is disappointed love. He has shown symptoms of violence, takes no interest in anything, cannot carry on a connected conversation, but is given to fits of melancholy and occasionally shows signs of imbecility. He was a bright, intelligent boy, and has for years been gradually deviating from an intellectual standard. His habits are immoral, but his family is one of the best in the county.
MILLS	[Semi-Weekly News: 25 June 1897, Vol. 13, No. 51]	In probate court Tuesday morning, Judge Brinkerhoff declared Mrs. William Mills (Ella Mills) insane. The patient will be removed to Toledo hospital within a day or two.

MITCHELL	[Richland Shield & Banner: 25 February 1893]	Wednesday. Gavin Mitchell was adjudged insane in Probate court this forenoon and application has been made for his admission to the Toledo asylum. Mitchell has been melancholy for several weeks, the result of a recent sickness.
MOORE	[Ohio Liberal: 20 February 1878]	Albert H. Moore, a medical student of Lexington, was taken by Sheriff Ritchie to the Central Lunatic Asylum at Columbus, last Friday.
MORGAN	[Mansfield Herald: 21 January 1886]	Eliza Jane Morgan was taken to the Insane Asylum last week. She has been for some time on the decline, mentally, total aberration of mind resulting several days ago.
MOWRY	[Richland Shield & Banner: 19 November 1892]	Saturday. The lunacy proceedings begun some time ago in Probate court against Samuel Mowry, of Monroe township, have been dismissed.
MUELLER	[Mansfield Herald: 17 January 1889]	Mrs. Philip Mueller was declared sane Saturday and discharged, because she could not be sent to the infirmary.
"	[Mansfield Herald: 06 June 1889]	Judge Mack declared Mrs. Philip Mueller insane Tuesday and she will be taken to the Toledo Asylum.
MULO	[Mansfield News: 30 August 1899]	John Mulo, an inmate of the Ohio Reformatory, was adjudged insane by Judge Brinkerhoff in probate court this morning and will be taken to the Toledo hospital in a few days.
NEWCOMER	[Mansfield (OH) Daily Shield: 14 April 1909]	Judge D.W. Cummins went to Butler today to hear the insanity case of Delavan Newcomer against whom a lunacy affidavit was filed this week. Newcomer is a cripple and was not in such physical condition that he could be brought to Mansfield.
OHLER	[Richland Shield & Banner: 23 January 1892]	Saturday. The infirmary directors yesterday took Mrs. L. Ohler, aged 83, to the infirmary near Lucas.
PHIPPS	[Richland Shield & Banner: 17 October 1891, Vol. LXXIV, No. 21]	Tuesday. An inquest of lunacy will be held in Probate court Friday on Mrs. Elizabeth Phipps, of Butler.

PITTENGER	[Ohio Liberal: 01 May 1878]	Miss Nancy Pittenger, residing in Weller Township, has been adjudged insane, and will be taken to the Dayton Hospital for the Insane, in order that she may be under the immediate care of Dr. A.D. Morris, the new Superintendent of that institution, who in his specialty has few superiors.

REYNOLDS	Mansfield News: 24 June 1901, Vol. 17, No. 97	Frank Reynolds, of Shelby, has been adjudged insane in probate court by Judge Brinkerhoff and was taken to the Toledo Hospital for the insane by Sheriff Barney Pulver, Monday afternoon.
RICKSECKER	[Semi-Weekly News: 26 October 1897, Vol. 13, No. 86]	Mary Eliza Ricksecker, aged 47 years, a resident of Springfield Township, was declared insane by Judge Brinkerhoff in probate court today and will be taken to the Toledo hospital.
RILAND	[Richland Shield & Banner: 20 May 1893]	Thursday. An inquest of lunacy was held in Probate court this morning upon Miss Ida Riland, the 17-years-old daughter of Wilson Riland, of this city. After hearing the testimony Judge Brucker pronounced Miss Riland insane and she will be removed to the Toledo asylum.
ROSE	[Mansfield News: 24 July 1899]	While at the hospital (Toledo Insane Asylum), the sheriff made inquiry about Celia Rose, the insane woman who was sent to Toledo several years ago after she had poisoned her parents and brother. A dispatch from Butler appeared in one of the city papers some weeks ago to the effect that she had been released from the Toledo asylum and that she was somewhere in the southern part of the state. On making inquiry Sheriff Boals learned that she is still in the institution and had been there right along. The sheriff was told that she had been asking about him every once in awhile and appeared anxious to see him, but the sheriff did not have time to see her.
SCHMIDT	[Mansfield Herald: 23 September 1886]	Mary Schmidt of Shelby was adjudged insane by Judge Mack Saturday. Application for her admission to the Columbus Asylum has been made.
"	[Mansfield Herald: 30 September 1886]	Mrs. Mary Schmidt, who was adjudged insane by the probate court, was taken to the county infirmary by Sheriff Flannery on Thursday.
SCHNEIDER	[Ohio Liberal: 02 July 1879]	Nettie Schneider was adjudged insane by the Probate Court, and last Monday was removed to the Central Ohio Lunatic Asylum.
SEAVER	[Richland Shield & Banner: 06 February 1892]	Tuesday. An inquest of lunacy will be held in Probate Court Saturday morning upon Mrs. Emma D. Seaver, of No. 5 North Walnut Street.

SHERIFF	[Mansfield News: 23 August 1901, Vol. 17, No. 148]	In probate court Judge Brinkerhoff has adjudged Henry Sheriff, of Madison Township, insane. Application has been made to the Toledo hospital authorities for his admittance to that institution.
SCHIRCK	[Semi-Weekly News: 09 April 1897, Vol. 13, No. 29]	Henry Schirck was adjudged insane in common pleas court Tuesday by Judge Wolfe whose province it is to sit upon such cases in the absence of the probate judge. Schirck was taken to the Toledo hospital for the insane that night by Deputy Sheriff Gregg.
SHAW	[Mansfield Herald: 23 September 1886]	At the inquest of lunacy held in probate court Monday in the case of William Shaw, the court found that the young man was not insane and he was discharged. All the witnesses swore that Shaw was subject to epileptic fits. He occasionally imbibes too freely of the ardent, and has been arrested and brought before his honor several times for that offense. He was locked up in the cooler one night last winter for raising a row at the opera house and resisting the officer who attempted to arrest him. His father, who resides at 63½ East Second Street, is unable to support him and possibly chose this method to get him where he could receive treatment.
SHAW	[Richland Shield & Banner: 09 April 1892, Vol. XXIV, No. 46]	Saturday. William Shaw, aged 28, residing at 100 Park Avenue East, was adjudged insane in probate court today. Application will be made for his admission to the Columbus Asylum, as there are already three in the Toledo Asylum.
STRATTON	[Richland Shield & Banner: 02 April 1892]	Friday. John Stratton, an incurable, sent up from Madison Township (to the Toledo asylum), will be brought back (by Sheriff Tressel).
SWANK	[Ohio Liberal: 31 July 1878]	Sheriff Ritchie will take down to the Central Ohio Lunatic Asylum to-day, Frank P. Miller, Jane Swank and Richard McCray; the first from near Shenandoah and the latter two from the County Infirmary.
TEETER	[Mansfield (OH) Daily Shield: 15 May 1909]	A lunacy affidavit has been filed in probate court by Mary Miller against Barbara Teeter of this city. The case will be heard Monday.
TEETER	[Mansfield (OH) Daily Shield: 24 February 1909]	A lunacy affidavit has been filed in probate court against Barbara Teeter of N. Diamond St. The hearing will be held tomorrow.
TOOMEY	[Richland Shield & Banner: 26 December 1891]	Monday. Mrs. Elizabeth Toomey, of Newman's Addition (Mansfield), was adjudged insane in Probate Court this forenoon. Her hallucination has been that her home is on fire and when she became imbued with that idea she would persist in ascending to the roof of the building and fighting the imaginary fire. Application has been made for her admission to the Toledo Asylum.
"	[Richland Shield & Banner: 09 July 1892]	Thursday. Mrs. Elizabeth Toomey, of this city, who has been an inmate of the Toledo Insane Asylum for the past seven months, returned home yesterday, pronounced cured.
TRIMBLE	[Ohio Liberal: 02 July 1879]	John S. Trimble has been admitted to the Central Ohio Lunatic Asylum, having been judged insane by the Probate Court.
TRIMBLE	[Mansfield News: 15 July 1899]	An affidavit of insanity has been filed against J.S. Trimble, of Shelby. The affidavit was sworn out by N.S. Trimble. The case was heard before Probate Judge Brinkerhoff this morning and was continued until Tuesday.
TRIMBLE	[Mansfield News: 22 July 1899]	J.S. Trimble, of Shelby, who was brought here this week and was adjudged insane, will be taken to Toledo next Monday for treatment in the Toledo hospital for the insane.
TURNER	[Ohio Liberal: 23 July 1879]	Mary Turner, an insane person, was taken to the Central Ohio Lunatic Asylum, from this place this morning.
WALLACE	[Mansfield Herald: 21 January 1886]	William Wallace, the young man who was stricken with lunacy some time ago, was taken to Columbus Wednesday week by Sheriff Flannery and Gates to be placed in the Insane Asylum. Mr. Wallace's recovery , it is stated, is only a matter of time. His physicians are sanguine that he will shortly recover from his demurred state of mind.
WATKINS	[Semi-Weekly News: 01 October 1897, Vol. 13, No. 79]	Martin Watkins, of this city, was taken to Toledo hospital, Wednesday, having been adjudged insane in probate court, Aug. 10.
WEIRICK	[Semi-Weekly News: 03 December 1897, Vol. 13, No. 97]	A warrant was sworn out before Judge Brinkerhoff in probate court Wednesday for the arrest of Samantha A. Weirick on the charge of insanity.
"	[Semi-Weekly News: 10 December 1897, Vol. 13, No. 99]	Bangorville. Mrs. Clarence Werick [sic.], of Perry Township, was taken to the Toledo hospital for the insane, Wednesday of last week.
WHEELER	[Mansfield Herald: 04 March 1886]	Application was made in probate court Wednesday week for an inquest of lunacy to be held on Catharine Whealer (sic.), of Newville, who is said by her physician, Dr. F.B. Callin, to have shown symptoms of mental hallucination and insomnia for the last two years, due to paralysis and domestic difficulty.
WHEELER	[Mansfield Herald: 04 March 1886]	Elizabeth Wheeler, of Newville, was adjudged insane at an inquest of lunacy held before the probate judge Monday morning. Application was made to have her admitted to the Central Ohio Asylum for the Insane at Columbus. The witnesses were Dr. F.B. Callin, N.H. Ruth and C.Y. Wheeler. She is married, is 54 years old and has several children.
WILLIAMS	[Mansfield Herald: 15 July 1886]	John Williams, the man who attempted to sell stolen cattle in Shelby, was declared insane Saturday. His age is about 55. Drs. Mitchell, Erwin and Loughridge, and Sheriff Flannery and Deputy Sheriff Gay were witnesses in the case before Judge Mack.
WILLIAMS	[Mansfield Herald: 22 July 1886]	John Williams, the insane cattle thief, who was refused admission to the Columbus asylum was taken to the county infirmary and was given some liberty and of course escaped from the latter institution.
WOLFORD	[Richland Shield & Banner: 22 October 1892]	Wednesday. In Probate Court today Mrs. Rebecca Wolford, of Bloominggrove township, was adjudged an imbecile and her son, William, was appointed her guardian.
ZUDZEWITZ	[Richland Shield & Banner: 26 December 1891]	Tuesday. John Zudzewitz, of Johns Addition, made application in Probate Court this forenoon for an inquest of lunacy to be held on his daughter, Yada. Hearing Thursday at 10 o'clock a.m. Thursday. In Probate court this forenoon Yada Zudzewitz, aged 18, was adjudged insane. She has been suffering from a physical ailment for some time which has affected her mind.
