Aberle 19 Oct 1889 Grace Aberle vs. Chas. Aberle.  Seventy-five dollars alimony allowed plaintiff during pendency of suit.
Ames  13 Apr 1889 Monday.  Divorce proceedings were commenced in Common Pleas Court this afternoon by Minerva Ann Ames from her husband, Geo. Curtis Ames.  The parties were married in 1881 in the old jail on East Third Street by 'Squire Sibbett.  Mrs. Ames was then pregnant having had illicit relations with Ames.  They lived together for one year when he left her saying "you go to h---- and I'll go around by the bridge".  Willful absence is the cause for divorce.  Ames was last heard of in Marion, but her attorneys, Douglass & Douglass, have been unable to hear from him by mail.
Balliett  10 Aug 1889 Thursday.  Lillie Balliett has petitioned for a divorce from her husband, James Balliett, on the grounds of willful absence.  The parties were married July 30, 1885, and have one child.
  19 Oct 1889 Lillie R. Balliett vs. Joseph Balliett.  Ruled in favor of the plaintiff, by Judge McCray.
Bowie 26 Oct 1889 Saturday.  Della Bowie has petitioned for a divorce from her husband, John Bowie, alleging his failure to provide a living for herself and child.  The parties were married May 26, 1885.
Burns  10 Aug 1889 Tuesday.  Jennie Burns has petitioned for a divorce from Wm. G. Burns on the grounds of habitual drunkenness and negligence.  The parties were married December 24, 1873, and have three children.
  12 Oct 1889 Monday.  Jennie Burns was granted a divorce from Wm. G. Burns by Judge McCray today.  The plaintiff was decreed the custody of the four children.
Carr  20 July 1889 Wednesday.  Silas C. Parker, attorney for Jennie Carr, commenced divorce proceedings against Newton Carr this afternoon in Common Pleas Court.  The parties were married March 15, 1872, at Marion, O.  Willful absence is the ground alleged.
  17 Aug 1889 Friday.  The divorce case of Jennie V. Carr vs. Newton M. Carr has been dismissed in Common Pleas Court and a new case styled Laura Carr vs. Newton M. Carr begun.  This is on account of an error in names by the attorney for the plaintiff.
Carr  03 Aug 1889 Wednesday.  On June 29th., Artie L. Carr commenced divorce and alimony proceedings against John E. Carr.  The parties settled the case before it came up for hearing and the defendant promised to pay the plaintiff $5 a month alimony.  He has failed to comply with his contract and revivor proceedings have been commenced.  Carr is employed by the Adams Express Company at Alliance and they are made defendants in the case.
  23 Sept 1889 Saturday.  Artie L. Carr was granted a divorce from John E. Carr by Judge May this afternoon.
Carr 21 Dec 1889 Monday.  Laura V. Carr was granted a divorce this morning from her husband, Newton Carr. 
Daugherty 07 Sept 1889 Elma L. Daugherty, through her attorneys, Donnell & Marriott, has commenced divorce proceedings against her husband, Allen H. Daugherty, both of this city.  The parties were married May 16, 1888, and plaintiff's maiden name was Elma Thompson.  April 20, 1889, the plaintiff avers Daugherty was guilty of adultery with one "Pearl" Arlington, an inmate of a down-town house.  The petition charges that defendant has also been guilty of the same crime since the above date and has refused to live with and provide for his wife.  The plaintiff wants divorce, restoration to her maiden name and alimony.
  21 Dec 1889 Elma L. Daugherty was granted a divorce from her husband, Allen H. Daugherty.
Davis 02 Nov 1889 Saturday.  Margaret A. Davis was granted a divorce from Wm. H. Davis by Judge May this morning and decreed $500 alimony.  Court has adjourned sine die.
Dice  11 May 1889 Monday.  Oscar Dice has petitioned for a divorce from Elizabeth Dice.  The parties were married August 31st., 1881, and one child, now aged 6 years, was born to them.  Willful absence of defendant is claimed by the plaintiff.
Dicus 02 Feb 1889 Katie Dicus, through her attorneys, Connolly & Laser, has commenced divorce proceedings against her husband, Benjamin F. Dicus.  The petitioner avers that she was married to the defendant July 12, 1858, and six children were the result of this union.  The defendant has been absent for the past three years and on these grounds a divorce is asked.
Douglass  16 Feb 1889 Fred Douglass was granted a divorce Saturday from Margaret Douglass.
Elliott 30 Nov 1889 Monday.  Josiah Elliott has petitioned for a divorce from Ida Elliott, alleging adultery with one Aaron Franks in Jackson Twp.  The parties were married Feb. 24, 1881, and have one child.  Franks and Mrs. Elliott recently eloped, mention of which was made in this paper at the time.
Ferguson  13 July 1889 Monday.  Wm. A. Ferguson has come to the conclusion that living with his wife, Netta E. Ferguson, is not the safest thing to do and has applied for a divorce.  They were married April 13, 1887, and have one child.  On July 15, 1888, she threatened to poison him and repeated the threat in the latter part of August, 1888.  She also used insulting and profane language, which quite shocked William's tender sensibilities.
  05 Oct 1889 Wednesday.  Wm. Ferguson was granted a divorce from Nettie Ferguson by Judge McCray yesterday and Samantha Grant from L.D. Grant.
Gongwer 16 Nov 1889 Friday.  Homer P. Sewell, attorney for Julia Irene Gongwer, began divorce proceedings in Common Pleas Court this morning against her husband, Louis M. Gongwer.  The parties were married at Ashland, September 6, 1870, and have three children.  Mr. Gongwer has been absent from his family for three years and is at present living at Sedalia, Mo.  The defendant has waived preliminary proceedings and entered his appearance.
Grant  27 July 1889 Wednesday.  Samantha Grant has commenced proceedings for a divorce from her husband, L.G. Grant, alleging habitual drunkenness and extreme cruelty.  The parties were married at Canton, June 30, 1881.
Gutzwiler 21 Sept 1889 Tuesday.  Mrs. Agnes Gutzwiler has commenced alimony proceedings against her husband, Henry Gutzwiler, and also asks for an order restraining him from visiting her.  Mrs. G., whose maiden name was Dolon, was married to the defendant in Feb. 1868.  Eight children was the result of this marriage, all of whom, except one, are living.  She is the owner of the house and lot on High Street, now occupied by them, while he is the owner of two other properties worth probably $1,000.  She asks that she be decreed all this property as he is spending it in drink.  The petitioner alleges that Gutzwiler has been neglecting his family and has been out of employment for some time.  He is also charged with extreme cruelty to the family.
Hackett  02 Mar 1889 C.W. Marriott, attorney for Sarah Hackett, has filed a petition for alimony with Clerk Burns, against Frank J. Hackett and John J. Wood, administrator of Wm. A. Hackett.  The petition alleges that the plaintiff and Frank J. Hackett were married, August 2d., 1882, and that one child, now 11 months old, was the result of this marriage.  On Nov. 4th., 1888, the plaintiff left her husband on account of his extreme cruelty.  Since this time he has failed to provide for her.  The petition further states that Frank J. Hackett has an interest in money now in the hands of J.J. Wood and that he is about to dispose of it in order to defraud her of alimony.  Mrs. Hackett asks that she be given reasonable alimony and that he can be enjoined from disposing of the money.
Hartman  10 Aug 1889 E.J. Stickel, attorney for Ike Hartman, is preparing a cross petition and answer to the divorce petition filed by Mrs. Hartman.  The answer will be a general denial of the charges made in her petition and the cross petition will be for divorce from her on the grounds of adultery.  The names of probably six well known married men, with whom Mrs. Hartman has been too intimate, will be set up in the petition.
  10 Aug 1889 Friday.  Bradford & Moorehouse are preparing a petition for Mrs. Ellen Hartman asking for a divorce from her husband, Ike Hartman.  The petition will be filed tomorrow.  Then there will be music.
  10 Aug 1889 Monday.  Mary Hartman has petitioned for a divorce from her husband, Ike Hartman, alleging drunkenness, cruelty and failure to provide.  The parties were married Dec. 4, 1871 and five children were born to them.  If all the parties interested in the escapades of the wife are brought into court there will be a sweet-smelling sensation in this city.
Hawn  06 July 1889 Saturday.  David Hawn has applied for a divorce from his wife, Mary Hawn, on the ground of willful absence.  The parties were married here Jan. 27, 1853, and for the past three years Mary has refused to live with her hubby.
Hettinger 14 Sept 1889 Monday.  B.F. Hettinger has applied for a divorce from Elizabeth Hettinger, the evangelist, mention of whose escapade is made in another column, alleging desertion and willful absence.  The parties were married at Millersburg, August 9, 1868.
Hill  18 May 1889 Thursday.  T.Y. McCray, attorney for Artensa Hill, has commenced divorce, alimony and injunction proceedings against Wm. Hill.  The parties were married May 13, 1879, and have one child.  On last Monday Hill struck his wife, knocking her down and afterwards ejected her from the house and locked the door.  He has been on several drunks the past three years and when in this state Mrs. Hill always fared badly.  Hill had threatened to dispose of the household goods, but was enjoined from doing so by Judge McCray.
Hively 23 Sept 1889 Adam Hively vs. Eliza J. Hively.  Divorce.  Twenty-five dollars alimony allowed defendant pending suit.
Hornby  25 May 1889 Tuesday.  H.P. Sewell, attorney for Ida Hornby, has filed a petition for divorce and alimony against Earnest Hornby.  The petition alleges cruelty, negligence and drunkenness.
  15 June 1889 Saturday.  The divorce case of Ida Horby vs. Earnest Hornby is being heard before Judge May this afternoon.
Hosack  04 May 1889 The divorce case of Anna Hosack vs. Earnest Hosack, which created such a social sensation at Shelby, was heard before Judge McCray this afternoon.  No defense was made.  T.H. Wiggins appeared for the plaintiff.  Mrs. Hosack related to the court the flat-iron episode and also the familiarity existing between Hosack and his cousin, the particulars of which were published in these columns at the time of the filing of the petition.  No alimony was asked and Judge McCray granted the decree in a very brief statement.  Hosack is still running a soda water fountain in a Cleveland drug store.
Huffy  18 May 1889 Saturday.  Hattie Huffy has petitioned for a divorce from her husband, Jno. Huffy, on the grounds of habitual drunkenness for more than three years.  The parties were married April 22, 1865 and three children were born to them.
  20 July 1889 Monday.  Judge May granted Hattie Huffy a divorce from her husband, John Huffy, in Common Pleas Court this morning.  Cruelty and failure to provide were the grounds of divorce.
Johnson 31 Aug 1889 Monday.  Sarah Ann Johnson has applied for a divorce from her husband, Joseph B. Johnson.  The partied were married here January 6, 1886 and have one child.  Johnson has been absent from his family for three years, was guilty of extreme cruelty to his wife and has committed adultery with Ann Hart.
  19 Oct 1889 Mary Ann Johnson vs. Joseph Johnson.  Ruled in favor of the plaintiff, by Judge McCray.
Karle 23 Nov 1889 Saturday.  Margaretta Karle, through her attorney, Lewis Brucker, has applied for a divorce from her husband, Michael Karle.  The parties were married June 28, 1880, and have five children.  For some time past the family has been living on West Bloom Street.  Karle is a tailor by occupation, but has an overpowering appetite for drink and when under the influence of liquor, abuses his wife and children shamefully.  He is the owner of two pieces of property in this city and his wife asks for divorce, alimony and an injunction restraining him from disposing of his real estate.
Keiser  13 Apr 1889 "Is marriage a failure?" had another affirmative reply in the filing of a divorce petition yesterday for Osee J. Keiser who asks to be divorced from her husband, William S. Keiser.  The parties were married September 27, 1886 in this city, and have one child, Waldron Earl Keiser, who is now seventeen months old.  Last fall Keiser began choking, beating and otherwise ill-treating his wife.  He kept this up until March 28th. last, when he not only injured her bodily but accused her of adultery and declared that she ought to be killed.  Someday he said, he might do the job himself.  She alleges that Keiser has refused to support her for some time and spends his time in idleness and often asks her for money that she earns over the wash tub.  Mr. & Mrs. Keiser live on West Bloom Street in a house owned by Mrs. K.  The large part of the furniture is also her property.  Divorce, restoration to her maiden name and equity relief are asked by the plaintiff.
Lamberton  30 Mar 1889 C.J. Lamberton has petitioned for a divorce from his wife, Anna Lamberton.  The parties were married Nov. 16, 1876, but since Dec. 1, 1876, Mrs. Lamberton has refused to live with her husband.
McClain 19 Jan 1889 Friday.  Sarah McClain was granted $75 alimony this morning in Common Pleas Court.  She has petitioned for a divorce from her husband, Wm. McClain, and this amount was asked for during the pendency of the suit.
Merrell / Merrill 24 Aug 1889 Monday.  Hattie V. Merrell has petitioned for a divorce from D.C.A. Merrell on the grounds of desertion.  The parties were married May 5, 1865.  The plaintiff also asks restoration to her maiden name of Haberman.
  19 Oct 1889 Hattie V. Merrill vs. D.C.A. Merrill.  Ruled in favor of the plaintiff, by Judge McCray.
Moores 07 Sept 1889 Monday.  Henry Moores has petitioned for a divorce from Martha Moores, alleging willful absence.  The parties were married November 3, 1885.
Parsons 28 Dec 1889 Tuesday.  Nora N. Parsons, through her attorneys Connolly & Laser, has commenced divorce proceedings against her husband, Elmer E. Parsons, alleging adultery with one Maggie Scott, at Webster City, Ia., Dec. 30, 1888.  The parties were married March 8, 1884.
Pierce  15 June 1889 Wednesday.  Salina Pierce has petitioned for a divorce from her husband, George Pierce, alleging extreme cruelty.  The parties were married September 23, 1875 at Wooster, and four children were born to them.
  19 Oct 1889 Sabina Pierce vs. Geo. Pierce.  Ruled in favor of the plaintiff, by Judge McCray.
Pierson  13 Apr 1889 Thursday.  Mrs. Mary Pierson is another person who has come to the conclusion that marriage is a failure and has filed a petition for a divorce from her husband, Henry C. Pierson.  The parties were married at Galion, Oct. 17, 1881.  Pierson deserted his wife about three years ago and for this reason she asks for a divorce.
  08 June 1889 Saturday.  Mary Pierson was yesterday granted a divorce from her husband, Henry Pierson, on the ground of willful absence.
Remy 14 Sept 1889 Peter Remy vs. Louisa Remy.  Divorce Granted and custody of child given to plaintiff.
Riddle  11 May 1889 Wednesday.  Cora C. Riddle has petitioned for a divorce from her husband, Wm. Riddle.  The parties were married in Chicago, November 26th., 1884.  In June 1886, the defendant was guilty of extreme cruelty to his wife and threatened to shoot her.  Since that time he has been willfully absent from plaintiff and has refused to provide for her.  Mrs. Riddle asks for restoration to her maiden name of Carey and reasonable alimony.
Sams  16 Mar 1889 Thursday.  Alice M. Sams has commenced divorce proceedings against her husband, Geo. W. Sams.  The parties were married July 11, 1871, and have no children.  The husband has been willfully absent from his spouse for the past three years.
Schott  16 Feb 1889 Sophia Schott, through her attorneys, Bradford & Moorehouse, has commenced divorce proceedings against her husband Adam Schott.  The parties were married Dec. 3, 1884, but for the past three years, on account of the idleness and profligacy of her husband, plaintiff has been compelled to live on the charity of friends.
  13 July 1889 Saturday.  Sophia Scott was granted a divorce from Adam Schott this morning by Judge May.  Schott, the husband, is a prisoner in the military prison at Leavenworth, Kas. for desertion from the United States Army.
Secrist  22 June 1889 Wednesday.  Daniel Secrist has commenced divorce proceedings against his wife, Mary M. Secrist.  The parties were married here January 17, 1887.  The plaintiff alleges that his wife committed adultery with Frank Moore, May 1st. last.
Shafer 12 Oct 1889 Monday.  Elizabeth M. Shafer has commenced proceedings against her husband, Frank Shafer, for divorce, alimony and injunction.  The parties were married at Bellville, Dec. 15, 1886, and have two children.  Last January, the petition avers, Shafer began beating and otherwise abusing plaintiff while she was pregnant.  On March 10th. he repeated his abuse and after the child was born, Sept. 8th., he refused to employ female help and she was obliged to do the house work and milk the cows and do other work that she was entirely unfitted to do.  Her husband is the owner of 96 acres of land in Jefferson Township and an injunction is asked for restraining him from disposing of his farm.  She has been living with her father since last Friday.
Shriner  18 May 1889 Monday.  The divorce case of Theresa Shriner vs. Harvey Shriner has been dismissed by the plaintiff's attorney, E.J. Stickle, and a new one commenced.  The parties were married Jan. 7, 1883, at Wooster, and have two children.  The defendant has been guilty of extreme cruelty to the plaintiff at different times and has lately refused to support her.
  20 July 1889 Tuesday.  Theressa Shriner was granted a divorce from her husband, Harvey Shriner, by Judge May this morning.  Extreme cruelty was alleged.
Sipe  19 Jan 1889 Saturday.  Clara Sipe was granted a divorce from her husband, Allit Sipe, by Judge McCray this morning.
Super  25 May 1889 Some time ago Effie S. Super commenced proceedings for alimony and injunction against her husband, Geo. H. Super.  This morning Wolfe & Henry, attorneys for Mrs. Super, filed a supplemental petition against Geo. H. Super for divorce, alleging that he has been guilty of adultery at divers times with one Mrs. Isaac Hartman.
Swoveland  26 Jan 1889 The divorce case of Martin L. Swoveland vs. Henrietta Swoveland has been settled by the plaintiff paying the defendant $800 alimony.  The case was to have been heard before the Circuit Court, but this movement was approved by the Judges and the case is now ended.
Thomas  27 Apr 1889 Thursday.  Samantha Thomas was granted a divorce from Wm. Thomas, of this city, in the Crawford County Common Please Court, April 11th.
Vietmyer 09 Nov 1889 Bell & Brinkerhoff, attorneys for Martha Vietmyer, today commenced proceedings for divorce from her husband, Henry W. Vietmyer.  The parties were married at Shreve, February 3, 1886, and have no children.  The defendant is living at Columbus, where he has considerable property.  The petition charges him with adultery with Millie Anderson, at Columbus.
Wagner  06 Apr 1889 Saturday.  Louisa E. Wagner commenced proceedings for divorce from her husband, Wm. C. Wagner, in Common Pleas Court this afternoon.  The parties were married at Tiffin, Nov. 10, 1888, and on Jan. 10th. last the defendant was guilty of adultery with one Blanche Dutton at Matt Ross' bagnio in Tiffin.  On the following day he deserted his wife and has refused to support her since that time.
Widders 14 Sept 1889 Wednesday.  After eleven years of married life, Verona E. Widders has concluded that marriage is not what it is reported to be and wants to be a lone "widder" in fact as well as in name.  She has filed her petition against Elijah H. Widders, in Common Pleas Court, praying for a divorce, alimony, restoration to her maiden name and custody of their six children.  She charges gross neglect of duty.  Mrs. Widders at present resides with her father, Samuel Hetler, southwest of the city.  The residence of her husband is unknown.  S.C. Stevenson is the plaintiff's attorney.
Wigle 07 Sept 1889 Friday.  Martella J. Wigle has brought proceedings for divorce against her husband, Fred B. Wigle, the well known German comedian.  Mrs. Wigle alleges that on July 4th., 1888, her husband was guilty of adultery with one Maude Houghton at the West House in Sandusky, and that he has been guilty of the same crime since.  The parties were married June 21st., 1874, at Canton.
  19 Oct 1889 Myrtilla Wigle vs. Fred B. Wigle.  Ruled in favor of the plaintiff, by Judge McCray.
