Who Is He?

This was a FUN series of articles published by the Mansfield News in 1904.   Clues would be given in one issue of the paper, and the next issue would contain the identities of the men described.   Scroll to the bottom of the page for the answers.


Who is He?

No. 16:  A native of Franklin county, Pa., where he was born on an October day a good many years ago, he came to Ashland county at the age of seven years.  He remained there until nearly 21 years of age, but has resided in Mansfield over forty years identified with the professional, business and official life of the city in various capacities  Like most of the young men of Mansfield who married in the ’60’s, he married a Mansfield young lady, one born here.  Do you know him?  [February 1, 1904]

No.  17:  He is a native of Wayne county, but has resided in Mansfield over 50 years.  He served throughout the war, the first part of his service being with the16th O. V. I. and after the expiration of his term of enlistment with it he re-enlisted in the 1st  Regiment, 1st Army Corps.  After the war he worked as a mechanic for a local shop for eight years.  He subsequently engaged in other pursuits, incidentally politics and has held county office by election and numerous appointments in connection with local and state institutions.  Do you know him?  [February 2, 1901]

No. 18:  He was born many years ago near Hollidaysburg, Pa., but has been a resident of Mansfield since the latter part of the ‘60’s and despite his years is one of the spryest  men in the city.  He has always been an indefatigable worker and is more energetic than most men half his age.  He was and is skilled in his craft, having a reputation more than state wide.  He enjoys the distinction of being probably the oldest member in the state of a certain fraternity.  Do you know him?  [February 3, 1904]

No. 19:  He was born in Ontario, this county, shortly after the Fourth of July in the latter part of the third decade of the last century - but he isn’t so old for all that.  His professional career was begun in Cincinnati.  He married the daughter of a distinguished Ohioan over 37 years ago.  He has been engaged in professional life in Washington as well as in Mansfield and Cincinnati, but has been continuously located here for over a quarter of a century.  Do you know him?  [February 4, 1904]

No. 20:  He is a native of Pennsylvania born at Allegheny City, July 1, 1829.  After a residence in Washington county, that state, until he was 17 he went to Pittsburg as a clerk.  Later on he was in the river trade, serving in all capacities on a steamboat from mud-clerk to captain.  Later he was in the drug business at New Castle, Pa., and finally located in this city in 1871, engaging in manufacturing business.  He has held and holds local official position of trust and honor and is prominently identified with a number of fraternal societies.  Do you know him?  [February 5, 1904]

No. 21:  He was born in Washington township, this county, before the last century had half expired.  He received his early education at the Lexington seminary.  Began business for himself at 18.  He has been identified during the greater part of his career in one industry but in later years is largely interested in various local enterprises.  He is a great worker one of the business men in Mansfield and makes business his chief recreation.  Do you know him?  [February 6, 1904]

No. 22:  He was born near Huron on Lake Erie, Aug. 30, 1815, and came to Mansfield over 79 years ago where he has since resided.  In his earlier years he was a salesman for one of the pioneer merchants.  He has been identified with many of Mansfield’s business interests and engaged in mercantile enterprises.  No man has had a more honorable business career than his and in the evening time of his life he has the good will and esteem of a great host of friends who can see him in the beneficial results of a well spent life.  Do you know him?  [February 8, 1904]

No.  23:  He just missed being born of the first day of the year 1840 by one day, having first seen the light of day in Carlisle, Pa.  He came to Ohio in 1858 and has been a resident of this city for forty years - possibly more.  He was married in 1862 to a young lady who was born in Massillon and their union was blessed with a numerous family.  He has engaged continuously in the same business since becoming a resident of this city.  Do you know him?  [February 9, 1904]

No. 24:  He was born in Canton 70 years and one month ago today.  For 68 years he has been a resident of Mansfield.  He was holding a city office when the war began, but resigned and entered the three months service, filling the time of his enlistment.  He held a position on connection with the courts for several terms and was later connected with one of the city departments for several years.  From his long residence here he is well posted on local history and has a fund of reminiscent anecdote that is always of interest.   Do you know him?  [February 10, 1904]

No. 25:  He is a native of Reading, Berks county, Pa.  From the age of ten until seventeen he lived on a farm near Wilmington, Del., returning to Reading when he learned his trade, later being employed at Harrisburg and Lewiston in Pennsylvania.  He came to this city in 1877 where he has since resided and since 1879 has been connected with the same firm.  He has occupied official position with credit to himself and the city.  Do you know him?  [February 11, 1904]

No. 26:  A native of England he came to this country in 1870 and in the latter part of that year to Mansfield where he has since resided and has been identified continuously with the industries of this city in many lines.  Thoroughly skilled in the work to which the greater part of his active business life has been given his reputation is by no means confined to this city, but here are located many monuments to his business and the thoroughness of his work.  He was married in the old country and his good wife shares with him the good fortune of his later years.  Do you know him?  [February 12, 1904]

No. 27:  His parents came from Ireland in 1836 and ten years later he was born in New York City.  Forty-one years ago he came to Ohio, locating in Crawford county whence he removed to Licking county in 1872.  In New York he served as an errand boy in a Wall street broker’s office, but after coming to Ohio he taught school, for eight years in the country and later in town schools, also serving as superintendent of several high schools.  Over 25 years ago he was principal of one of the Mansfield ward schools but for the past quarter of a century has held an important position with a local corporation.  Do you know him?  [February 13, 1904]

No. 28:  During the coming summer he will attain his forty-sixth anniversary.  He looked just as old ten years ago, but is always a good feeler and won’t be old if he lives to be 96.  He is a native of Monroe township, this county.   He was raised on the farm and his early education was obtained in the country schools.  He was graduated from Wooster university in 1879.  He has held municipal and county office and has served by appointment on state commissions.  He is a “Jiner” from way back, a great story teller (aside from his profession) and a hale fellow well met.  Do you know him?  [February 15, 1904]

No. 29:  A native of Washington county, Pa., he was born Jan. 4, 1823, he has been a resident of this county about 80 years.  During the war he held a county office, although a member of the minority party.  Over 50 years ago he was married, his wife being a native of Virginia.  He has always been active in the politics of the county and has been a counsellor in his party for many years.  In his boyhood days he lived upon the farm and his early efforts in business were in buying and selling products of the farm in which he was very successful.  Do you know him?  [February 16, 1904]

No. 30:  He has been a resident of Mansfield for a little over 56 years, having first seen the light of day in this city.  His wife was a Knox county girl and they were married over 31 years ago.  At the age of 17 he commenced a line of work which he followed many years and in which he made the acquaintance of about every business man, especially shippers in the city.  Some years ago he retired from the business that engaged the years of his younger manhood, but has since been active in other lines.  Do you know him?  [February 17, 1904]

No. 31:  A native of Trumbull county, where he was born in the latter part of the first half of the nineteenth century, he began his education in the common schools of a Stark county city and continued it in Pennsylvania.  He came to Mansfield in the latter part of the ’60’s, and has ever since resided here.  He is one of the best known men in the city, has occupied and now occupies official position but to go into description would be to name him - and you must guess.  Do you know him?  [February 18, 1904]

No. 32:  He was born in Canada in 1849, but has been a resident of this city about 40 years, and after learning his trade here remained with the firm employing him for 27 years, later entering the employ of another local concern with which he has since remained in the capacity of a foreman.  He was first married nearly thirty years ago to a young lady who was born two miles northeast of Mansfield, and is now married to a second wife.  Do you know him?  [February 19, 1904]

No. 33:  He was born in Springfield township, this county, in 1831.  He was raised on the farm and also taught school.  He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1860, but later engaged in other business which he has followed continuously with the exception of his service during the civil war.  He was married in 1861 to the daughter of a well known citizen of Mansfield, the family consisting of two daughters and a son.  He assisted in organizing a cavalry company in this city of which he was made first lieutenant and was later promoted to the captaincy.  Do you know him?  [February 20, 1904]

No. 34:  He was born in this city something over 66 years ago and was educated in the local schools and also attended the institute at Norwalk and Dension university at Granville.  In his earlier years he clerked in several local stores, back in the ’50’s.  He later engaged in a line of business in which he continued for many years, his experience with various departments of such work being wide.  He is very prominently identified with the business interests of Mansfield.  He has indulged little in politics but has been importuned on various occasions to do so.  He has served the city in numerous capacities and has been honored with appointment to several positions of trust and importance by chief executives of Ohio.  Do you know him?  [February 22, 1904]

No. 35:  A native of England he came to this country in 1829 when he was nearly eight years of age his parents residing at Northfield, this state.  In 1834 the family removed to the vicinity of Lucas and there the subject of this sketch engaged in manufacturing for some years.  He later removed to this city, but was for a time engaged in business elsewhere, though for a number of years past again a resident of this city.  His wife, who will in a few months celebrate her 75th anniversary, was born near Lucas.  They were married in 1851 and five children were born to them.  He is in politics a Republican and in church connections a Presbyterian.  Do you know him?  [February 23, 1904]

No. 36:  He was born in this city, Christmas day, 1826.  He was married in August, 50 years ago, in Springfield township.  He served in public business a number of years, the different terms in the same capacity being divided by service in the 120th O. V. I.  For several years he has been living the retired life in this city.  Do you know him?  [February 24, 1904]

No. 37:  He came to Mansfield 56 years ago today.  He was married in Cleveland 53 years ago today.  He was 22 years of age when he came to Mansfield.  He is a native of Bavaria, Germany, but came here from Alabama.  He was one of the veteran volunteer firemen of Mansfield.  His business career has been one of many years and despite his age there are few days that he is not as busy as ever, though having ostensibly retired from active business some time ago.  Do you know him?  [February 25, 1904]

No.  38:  He was born in the Fatherland, in Hesse-Darmstadt, Aug. 14, 1844, and came to this country when nine years old.  His early years were spent on a farm near Petersburg, but about 40 years ago he came to this city where he has since resided and has been engaged in commercial pursuits in a large way, especially during the past  twenty-five years.  He was married in January, 1867, his wife being the daughter of a Mifflin township farmer.  He has been successful in business and in these later years is taking more relaxation from business and an occasional well-earned rest.  Do you know him?  [February 26, 1904]

No. 39:  His ancestors for several generations lived in Pennsylvania and he was born in Chambersburg, that state in the latter half of 1847.  As a youngster he learned the printing trade, but before he was sixteen he enlisted for army service at Harrisburg, but was sent home because he was too young.  A year later, however, he succeeded in enlisting in the signal corps.  After the war he abandoned his early trade and began a new one at which he worked a while with his father in Pennsylvania and continued it in Mansfield where he came in April, 1867, and has since resided.  He has held office in this county by election and in the city by appointment.  He is a member of the G. A. R. and Odd Fellows and also does some farming.  Do you know him?  [February 27, 1904]

No. 40:  He as born in Westmoreland county Pennsylvania in 1834.  In his earlier years he lived in Holmes county, Ohio, and later in Knox county, where he has learned the joiner’s trade and worked from 1852 to 1864.  In the latter year he came to Mansfield and for twenty-eight years was in the employe of one concern.  He was married in Fredericktown in 1859.  In politics a Democrat and in lodge affiliation an Odd Fellow of nearly fifty years’ standing; he is well known in fraternity circles of the Three Links.  He has held local office, the first time twenty-three years ago, and has been serving more recently than that.  Do you know him?  [February 29, 1904]

*Note - In sketch No. 22, that of Hiram R. Smith, published Monday, the date of his birth should have been  Jan. 7, 1813, instead of Aug. 30, 1815, the latter date being one in connection with the family history appearing on a line so near to reference the subject of the sketch that it was erroneously substituted.  On May 16, next, Mr. and Mrs. Smith expect to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary.
