We are pained to record the destruction by fire on last Thursday morning, December 14th., of Hedges' Block in Mansfield, in which was located the Shield and Banner office, as also Mr. Hedges' law office, both of which were entirely destroyed.

Three lives were lost -- a Miss Mathias, Mr. John Cline, Jr., and Henry Southerland -- the latter though not dead, is supposed to be fatally injured.  The wall fell upon an adjoining building, in which were the persons killed.  Mr. Glessner's loss is about $12,000 insured in various offices for about $5,000.  His books and accounts alone were saved.  The Shield and Banner will soon re-appear, in an entire new dress.  The most unfortunate loss is the Shield and Banner bound files, for the past thirty years.  These can never be replaced.

Mr. Glessner has been identified with the interests of Richland County for more than thirty years, and deserves well at the hands of his patrons.  Many are owing him small sums.  It should be the aim of everyone to at once pay up, and advance him a year's subscription, which would cheer his heart under his heavy loss, and make him feel how many friends he has who are friends indeed because friends in need.  The Herald has placed the patrons of the Shield under peculiar obligations, by the timely assistance in aiding the Shield to appear -- obligations which will be remembered.  The entire loss by the fire is estimated at $40,000.
