The William & Nettie (Greving) Spriggins Home

-

This two story three bedroom, wood frame house was built by William Spriggins, grandfather of William M. Tivener, Sr. The first house number was 239 Rae Ave. sometime  after W.W.II, it was changed to 247 Rae Ave. which it is still today.

When he built the home is not known, but around the years 1915-1920. Bill, as he was called was a carpenter contractor in Mansfield and built many of the homes in that town. Bill & Nettie lived in the garage in the back while he built the house. Bill Spriggins was also the Care Taker of North Lake Park for many years.

William M. Tivener, Sr. was born October 1935 in this house, and his grandparents both lived and died in this home. Williams' mother sold the home around 1978 and this picture was taken about five years later. It is not in the condition that Bill Spriggins and his daughter kept it. They painted it white every two or three years.

It had two large pines in the front yard, which were cut down when they become so large they were a threat to the house. Nettie Spriggins grew many flowers in the back yard, and a little garden. The home located just south of North Lake Park, on what is now Rae Ave. Not far from the Mansfield Skating Rink. In fact when the rink burned to the ground we stood in the back bedroom window and watched the fire.

Bill Spriggins was born, 22 Dec 1886 Richland Co., and died 9 Jun 1958 Mansfield. Nettie Greving Spriggins died in the upstairs bedroom after she had several strokes . Nettie was born, 12 Nov 1879 Richland Co. & d. 4 Jun 1955 Mansfield.
Both William & Nettie Spriggins buried Mansfield Memorial Cemetery on Park Ave. West & Chambers Road.
