03 January 1891, Vol. LXXIII, No. 33

Marriage Licenses issued this week:  Henry C. Cleland & Mamie Barr;  Albertis G. Heickel & Emma Sigler;  Clarence W. Ehret & Eva L. May;  Gideon Shafer & Anna Stine.

Mifflin.  Today (Tuesday) is the time for the predicted wedding of Miss Ida Hart to Edward F. Doerrer.  A few intimate friends were invited.  Miss Hart is one of our most popular young ladies and Mr. Doerrer is an esteemed young farmer.  The young couple start with good wishes from their many friends.

Newville.  It has long been the custom among our young people to postpone their weddings until Christmas.  Among these weddings was one that came off in our town last Christmas, which was one of the grandest for many years.  Winfield Darling, who is well known here, was married to Miss Ida Young, a daughter of our Postmaster.  The marriage ceremony was performed by the Rev. Sykes at the Valley church, after which they returned to the bride's father, where 60 of their friends had assembled.  A sumptuous dinner was prepared and disposed of. 

Newville.  Vernon Butler, of near Perrysville, was married Dec. 24 to Miss Marie Sheehy, of near Newville.  They were married by the Rev. Brubaker, of Ashland.  This gives the Duke another nephew.  Long may they live.

Thursday.  The marriage of Mr. Samuel R. Fisher and Miss Aida L. Weatherby took place at 6:30 last evening in St. Luke's church in the presence of a large number of invited guests.  The ceremony was performed in a beautiful and impressive manner by Rev. D.W. Smith, the bride's pastor.  Messrs. Harvey Leech and Arthur H. Smith were the ushers and Mrs. E.E. Weatherby presided at the organ.  The bride is one of Mansfield's most estimable young ladies and the groom comes from Mercersburg, Pa.  They will make their residence in this city.

Saturday.  Married, at the parsonage, Christmas Eve, by the Rev. R.H. Edmonds, Charles Taylor and Miss Lucretia Yoha, both of Mansfield, O.

Washington Township.  Married, in Mansfield, Thursday, January 25, Mr. Henry Lutz, of this place, and Miss Arminta Fleming, of Mansfield, we extend congratulations.

Saturday.  A pretty home wedding occurred on Thursday evening at the residence of Capt. & Mrs. H.E. Kingsboro.  The groom was Mr. Ben. Kuhn, of Mansfield, the well known attorney for the Mansfield Machine Co., and Miss Hattie Kingsboro, of this city, was the fair bride.  The happy couple have our best wishes for future happiness.  -- As re-printed from the Shelby Free Press.

Tuesday.  Peter Miller, Jr., this afternoon, while under arrest, took out a marriage license for himself and Catharine Zudeweitz.  Miller had been arrested by the defendant on the charge of bastardy, but after the parties were married by Jonas Smith, J.P., the case was dismissed.

Wednesday.  Married, last night, at the First English Lutheran parsonage, by the pastor, Frank Steiner and Gertrude Harter.

Wednesday.  Married, at St. Peter's Catholic Church, at 9 o'clock this forenoon, Joseph Hecht and Miss Catharine Koeingshoefer, both of this city.

The many friends of Mr. Charles Carter and Miss Laura Harroun, both of this city, will be pleased to learn that invitations for their marriage on Wednesday evening, May 6th., have been issued.  The ceremony will take place at the residence of Mr. & Mrs. H. Harroun, on Park Avenue West, after which the happy couple will leave for Barboursville, Ky., their future home.  The bride, Miss Harroun, is one of the most prominent young ladies of the city, highly esteemed by all who have the pleasure of her acquaintance, while the groom is a prominent and successful young business man, being engaged in the lumber business in the above named town in Kentucky.  Mr. Carter was, also deputy treasurer of this county for two years under ex-Treasurer Remy.  The SHIELD extends its congratulations.

Monday.  The engagement of Joseph New and Miss Carrie Heineman, both of this city, was publicly announced last night, the nuptials to take place sometime in the near future.  Mr. New is one of the prominent young business men of the city, having conducted a clothing business on Main Street in the St. James block for the past four years, while his affianced, Miss Heineman, is the niece of Mr. & Mrs. A.J. Heineman and a young lady of many accomplishments and prominent in the society circles of the city.  The happy event promises to be one of the swellest affairs of the kind for many seasons.  The SHIELD extends its best wishes and congratulations.

Thursday.  Married, about 8 o'clock last night, at the First English Lutheran church, by the pastor, Dr. H.L. Wiles, J. Frank Green and Miss Mamie Keller, both of this city.  The groom is well known to many of the people of this city, while the bride is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. E.H. Keiser, and is quite prominent in local society circles.  Mr. Green will leave for Chattanooga, Tenn., Monday, where he will accept the position of bookkeeper with his uncle, who is in the contracting business in that city.  Mrs. Green expects to follow him in about two months and they will then make their home in Chattanooga permanently.  The best wishes of the SHIELD go with the young people in their southern home.

Marriage Licenses Issued:  Joisah S. Hedges & Maggie E. Craig.

Tuesday.  There was a private wedding at the handsome home of Dr. J.W. Craig, corner of West Third and Mulberry Streets, yesterday evening, at 5:30 o'clock, the contracting parties being Dr. J.S. Hedges, one of our most popular young physicians, and Miss Maggie, the youngest daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Craig, one of the most favorably known and accomplished young ladies of the city.  The ceremony was performed by Rev. D.J. Meese of the First Presbyterian church, assisted by Rev. Frank B. Foster, of the United Presbyterian Church.  There were none present except the immediate relatives of the bride and groom.  Dr. and Mrs. Hedges left at 6:10 p.m. for Washington, D.C. where the Doctor will attend the meeting of the American Medical Congress now in session.

Wednesday.  Charles S. Carter and Miss Laura Harroun will be married at the residence of the bride's parents, Mr. & Mrs. H. Harroun, 75 Park Avenue West, at 6 o'clock this evening, Rev. J.W. Hubbell, D.D., officiating.  About 100 of the young friends of both bride and groom will attend the wedding, after which all will sit down to a wedding dinner.  The newly married couple will leave on the 9:21 Erie train for Cincinnati.  They will spend several weeks visiting various points of interest in the south, finally arriving at Barboursville, Ky., their future home, where Mr. Carter is engaged in the lumber business.

Thursday.  A pleasant even occurred last night at the home of Jacob McCullough in Woodville, one and a half miles south of the city.  It was the marriage of Miss Carrie McCullough to Mr. George Cashell, of Lucas.  About 75 guests, friends of the contracting parties, were present and witnessed the ceremony, which was performed by Rev. H.L. Wiles at 7:30 o'clock.  An elegant wedding supper was then served, after which the bride and groom left for a two weeks tour to Cleveland and other cities.  Mr. & Mrs. Cashell were the recipients of many presents, among which was a check for $100 from the bride's father.  Mr. Cashell is the teacher of the Woodville school and on their return the couple will reside with the bride's parents.

Lexington.  T. Hursley, of Ashland, and Miss Mary Smurr, of this place, were united in marriage by Rev. D. Street, Thursday.  They will make their home in Ashland.

Thursday.  Miss Tillie Schroer, daughter of Chas. Schroer, and Valentine Edenberger [Erdenberger], of this city, were married at the residence of the bride's parents, No. 45 North East Diamond Street, at 8 o'clock last evening.  Rev. Buesser, pastor of the St. John's Evangelical Church, performed the ceremony, at the close of which those present sat down to a wedding supper.  Only the immediate friends of the contracting parties were present.  During the supper, an orchestra rendered delightful music, after which dancing was indulged in until 2 o'clock a.m.

E.S. Walters, of Columbia City, Ind., and Miss Laura Rhein were married in St. Peter's Catholic Church by Rev. Magenhann, at 9 o'clock this morning, after which the solemn holy mass was participated in by the large congregation present.  After the ceremony was performed the bridal party drove to E.J. Potter's studio and had a group photograph taken.  The newly-wedded couple leave for Detroit, Cleveland and Niagara Falls at mid-night, expecting to remain away about 10 days.  They will then return to this city and shortly after move to their new home in Columbia City, Ind.  The bride is the accomplished daughter of Geo. Rhein, of 63 West Third Street, of this city, and is highly esteemed by all who know her.  The groom, Ed. Walters, is the son of Fred. Walters, who does business on North Main Street, this city, and is well known to all the young Mansfield people.  He is one of the prominent young business men of Columbia City, having been engaged in the wholesale liquor business in that place for some time.

At high noon today Mr. Claude L. Platt and Miss Margaret Graham Taylor, daughter of Captain and Mrs. W.H. Taylor, were quietly married at the  residence of the bride's parents on West Third Street, by Rev. D.J. Meese, of the First Presbyterian Church.  the groom is a well known young man of this city and for several years was connected with the SHIELD as city editor.  Later he went to Pittsburg and served on the reportorial staff of the Pittsburg Post.  For the past six months, however, he has been connected with the Platt Carriage Co., of this city, as salesman, as such doing excellent work for the company.  He has many friends and his prospects are unusually bright.  Miss Taylor is one of the city's best known young ladies.  the SHIELD wishes for Mr. & Mrs. Platt all the sunshine that nuptial joy can bring.  They left at noon for an extended trip to Adrian, Mich., and other points.  Mr. Platt will probably take charge of the Chicago branch of the company's business and will reside there.

Miss Minnie Long, daughter of F.E. Long, of this city, and Martin Grim, also of this city, will be united in marriage at the residence of the bride's parents on North Adams Street, at 8 o'clock this evening.  The ceremony will be performed by the Rev. R.T. Stevenson in the presence of only the immediate friends of the contracting parties.  Rev. Daniel Unstott and wife, of Jefferson, O., and other friends from Canton and Akron will be present.

Tuesday.  Married, last evening, at the office of and by Justice Endly, Joseph S. Gardner and Anna Reed, both of this city.

Thursday.  Married, last evening, at the residence of Geo. B. Herring, 83 South Main Street, Albert A. Steel and Miss Nora Leiter.  Rev. H.L. Wiles officiating. 

Monday.  Married, Saturday evening, at the parsonage of the First English Lutheran Church, by Rev. H.L. Wiles, Walter Robinson and Miss Ida Snyder.  Mr. R. is the turnkey at the jail and the best wishes of the SHIELD are extended to himself and bride.

Wednesday.  Frank L. Bard, of the Mansfield Paper Mill, at an early hour this morning supplied himself with a marriage license for himself and Miss Ida M. Paramore, near Crestline, and left for the residence of his fiancée, where the ceremony will take place today.  The SHIELD tenders its congratulations to the newly-married couple and wishes them a long and happy life.

Thursday.  Married, last night, at the First Lutheran parsonage by Rev. H.L. Wiles, Henry Krabill, of this city, and Miss Minnie Bromaunk, of Mt. Gilead.  They will make this city their future home.

Thursday.  Cards are out announcing the marriage of Jessie Violet, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. A.V. Smith, to George W. Lippincott, at the residence of the bride's parents, on Tuesday evening, June 30th., at 8:30 o'clock.

Thursday.  Married, last evening at the residence of the bride's parents, No. 108 South Adams Street, J.C. Robinson, of Allegheny, Pa., and Miss May DeHart, Rev. H.L. Wiles officiating.  The newly married couple left for Van Wert, O., this morning to visit the groom's relatives before going to their new home in Allegheny.

Saturday afternoon John W. Sites and Mrs. John Woodring, both of Lucas, eloped, coming to this city in a buggy, since which time they have not been seen.  Sites was a professional loafer, sometimes working in one of the stone quarries near Lucas and leaves a wife.  Mrs. Woodring leaves a husband and two daughters to rejoice at her sudden flight.  Her husband is a laboring man and is well spoken of by those who know him.  There has been considerable talk for some months in regard to the undue intimacy existing between Sites and Mrs. Woodring.

Wiles performing the ceremony.  The groom is too well known in this city and county to require any introduction through these columns, and the bride, who has been living in this city for several years is well known in the vicinity of Shelby and Independence.  The SHIELD congratulates the next county commissioner and his bride and wishes them a long and happy life.

Thursday.  Married, last evening, at the residence of and by Rev. A.B. Moore, of South Main Street, C.H. King, of this city, and Miss Pauline Rothlisberger, whose parents reside 2 miles west of the city.

Thursday.  This morning a marriage license was issued in Probate Court for John Boey and Adella Boey, of Rome.  In explanation for the similarity of names the applicant said the parties had been previously married and divorced in another county, upon the petition of Mrs. Boey, who did not ask for restoration of her maiden name.  They have not determined to try it again and John will once more escort Adella to the hymeneal alter.

At the residence of Mr. & Mrs. A.V. Smith, No. 11 East First Street, Mansfield, O., Tuesday morning, June 30th., occurred the marriage of their daughter, Jessie Violet, to George W. Wednesday.  William A. Snyder and Florence Miller, both of this city, were united in marriage by Rev. H.L. Wiles, at the parsonage last night.

MARRIED, At the Congregational parsonage, Wednesday evening, July 22d., 1891, Mr. Wm. H. Burkholder and Miss Kittie Stevens, both of this city, Rev. J.W. Hubbell officiating.  The readers of the SHIELD will recognize in the above "party of the first part" the city editor of this paper.  The bride is the youngest daughter of W.K. Stevens, the chief engineer of the Mansfield Water Works.  "Burk's" associates on the SHIELD AND BANNER unite with the many friends of the happy couple in wishing them long life and an abundance of happiness.  Mr. & Mrs. Burkholder will occupy rooms at No. 54 South Main Street.

Friday.  MARRIED -- At 5 o'clock last evening at the residence of the bride's parents, two miles east of the city, Mr. G.W. Rand and Miss Della M. Johns, Rev. Ira C. Mitchell officiating.  The groom is well known in the section and the bride is the daughter of deputy oil inspector W.D. Johns.  The SHIELD joins the friends of the happy couple in congratulations.

Tuesday.  Christian Burggraf, a native of Germany, who came to this country in August, 1889, made application in probate court this morning to become a citizen of the United States.  At the same time he secured a marriage license for himself and Miss Ida Markley.

Mifflin.  Married, at the residence of the bride's mother, on last Sunday night, by the Rev. Smith, Blanche Landis and James Parks, of Akron.

Thursday.  Married, last evening, at the office of and by Justice A.J. Endly, George Meier and Lydia Kinser.

Thursday.  Married, August 12th., at 6 o'clock p.m., by Rev. A.B. Moore, at his residence, 199 South Main Street, Albert G. McGregor and Miss Ora Whipp.

This evening at the residence of S.G. Cummings, 163 Park Avenue West, a quiet wedding will take place, the contracting parties being Rev. Thomas Hill, of Crestline, and Miss Mary M. Ruhl, of this city.  Dr. H.L. Wiles, of this city, will perform the ceremony.  The groom has been the pastor of the Lutheran Church at Crestline for several years and is well known to many of our people here.  The bride is a sister of Mrs. S.G. Cummings and has made her home with the latter for a number of years past.  Immediately after the ceremony the happy couple will leave for Lakeside, where they will remain for a week or ten days, after which they will return to Crestline, where they will make their future home.  The SHIELD joins the many friends of the newly married couple in wishing them a long and happy life.

Jackson Township.  Rev. Thomas Hill, who was recently married, was formerly from Jackson, the early part of his life being spent in this vicinity.  He is well and favorably known here.  His many friends wish him a bright and prosperous future.

Thursday.  Wedding invitations have been received in this city for the marriage of Wm. S. Fitch, formerly a well known newspaper man of this city, but now of Washington, D.C., and Miss Jeannette Donnell, of the Capitol City, Sept. 2d.

Thursday.  This morning J.C. Laser received a letter from J.T. Creigh, formerly of this city, but now of Round Oak, Ga., to the effect that he will be married to a Georgia girl today and will immediately start with his bride for this city.

Friday.  Married, last night at the office of and by Justice Smith, J.W. Wise and Alice Brandt.

Monday.  Cards are out announcing the marriage of Ida J. Hunter, of Rives, to Dr. W. Alvin White, of Galveston, Ind., late from Cleveland, Ohio.  The wedding will take place at the residence of the bride's mother, one mile northeast of Rives.

Wednesday.  Tonight, at the elegant home of the bride's parents, Judge and Mrs. J.W. Jenner, will be celebrated the wedding of their daughter, Mary, to C.C. Wagner, son of J.W. Wagner.  The bride is one of the most accomplished and charming of ladies.  The ceremony will be private, followed by a reception to friends.  Immediately after the reception the newly married couple will leave for Detroit and the lakes, where they will remain for several weeks.  Returning, they will reside on Park Avenue West, where a handsome home has been erected this summer by the prosperous groom.

Thursday.  Married, last evening, at the residence of Henry Beck, 128 West Third Street, G.L. Wolff and Miss Mary Scharff, both of this city.  Rev. R. Bethelt officiated.

Thursday.  Harold H. Humphryes and Miss Minnie Smith will be married tonight at the residence of the bride's parents on West Fourth Street.  The couple are of the city's most worthy young people.  Revs. Hubbell and Fletcher will officiate, after which Mr. and Mrs. Humphryes leave for the east via Niagara Falls, to be gone several weeks.

Bellville -- Married, on Wednesday evening, Mar. 25th. at the home of the bride's parents, by Rev. S.S. Kauffman, Mr. Thomas F. Adams of Newark, and Miss Myrtie A. Stewart.
