DIR - SULTZER -- One of the most pleasant society events of the week took place at the home of J. Dir and wife on Park Avenue last night.  The occasion was the marriage of their son, John Dir, and Miss Emilie Sultzer.  The ceremony was performed by Dr. H.L. Wiles and the marriage was solemnized at 7 p.m.  Immediately after the ceremony the happy couple surrounded by guests sat down to an elegant wedding supper.  A number of fine presents testified to the respect in which the contracting parties are held by their many friends.  The groom is a well-known business man of the city, having been in the musical instrument business here for about five years.  The bride has been a clerk in Mr. Dir's store about two years.  The couple will reside with Mr. Dir's parents on Park Avenue East.  Those present were J. Dir and wife, J.C. Sultzer and wife, Mr. & Mrs. Pfeiffer, Mrs. Anna Klein, Mrs. Frank Dir, Rev. H.L. Wiles and wife, Misses Lizzie Endly and Della McMillen and Messrs. Lee, Hoffman and Reinhart. 

On Tuesday evening, Sept. 3, 1895, by Rev. T.S. Nugart, Samuel Raymond of Shelby and Mrs. Elizabeth Kochenderfer.  The wedding took place at the home of the bride ten miles east of this city and was attended by over 100 guests from Shelby, Mansfield and other places. 

J.S. Hoffman, manager of the local telephone exchange, and Miss May Carter, daughter of Merchant Carter were married at the residence of the bride's parents at 5 o'clock this afternoon.  The ceremony was performed by Dr. J.W. Hubbell in the presence of the immediate relatives of the contracting parties.  After the ceremony Mr. and Mrs. Hoffman and the guests sat down to an elegant wedding supper.  They leave at 8:10 this evening for a short trip to Toledo and other lake points.  Mr. Hoffman is well known in this city, as he has been in business here for some time.  Miss Carter is a talented young society lady and hosts of admiring friends extend congratulations.

Married, by Rev. N.H. Loose, D.D., at the residence of John Hartman in Jackson Twp., Sept. 18, Henry N. Crall and Miss Hattie L. Hartman, both of Shelby.  About 100 guests were present.  The dinner was a sumptuous repast.  Just after the clock struck 12, Rev. Dr. Loose pronounced the happy couple husband and wife.  The wedding presents were numerous and valuable.  The bride and groom will at once settle in their home on South Gamble Street, Shelby.  The sterling virtues of these worthy young people assure their future success.

William O. Long and Miss Katherine Ahlheim were united in marriage at 6 o'clock last night by Rev. D.J. Meese at the Presbyterian parsonage.  After the ceremony the happy couple and their friends were driven to the home of the bride's parents, Mr. & Mrs. Jacob Ahlheim at 131 South Diamond Street, where about 40 guests enjoyed the elegant supper and viewed the handsome presents, the tokens of the esteem and respect in which the newly-wedded couple are held by their friends.  The wedding supper was served at 6:30.

The First Lutheran parsonage was the scene of another happy wedding ceremony at 7:30 last night.  The occasion was the marriage of Peter Reimund of Cleveland and Miss May E. Boreman of this city.  Dr. H.L. Wiles performed the ceremony, after which the bridal party proceeded to the home of the groom's parents, Mr. & Mrs. John Reimund, of 516 Spring Mill Street.  A fine wedding supper was served at 8 o'clock, after which the happy couple left for their future home at Cleveland.

PLYMOUTH -- On Tuesday of last week, Charles Wentz and Miss Ida Kotz were joined in the holy bonds at the Lutheran parsonage, Rev. Miller officiating.

PLYMOUTH -- Thursday next will witness the marriage of Miss Lillie, daughter of Charles Hutchinson, to Mr. Brubaker of Shelby.  Elaborate preparations are making for the entertainment of a large number of guests.

MARRIED -- At the residence of Rev. E.P. Sanders, 135 South Diamond Street, Sept. 26, 1895, Mr. Jefferson Mackey and Miss Elizabeth Shafer, both of near Bellville.

MARRIED -- Sept. 22 by Rev. Dr. N.H. Loose of Shelby at his residence, C.A. Clark of Amoy and Gertrude Graham of Adario.

Albert Pittman and Miss Maggie Craig were married at the residence of the bride's parents on North Adams Street, last night, by the Rev. H.L. Wiles.  A few invited guests were present.

George Mull and Miss Annetta M. Condon, both of Ontario, were married at the home of the bride's brother in Galion yesterday.  Quite a number of the relatives were present to witness the ceremony and enjoy the nuptial banquet.  Many beautiful and valuable presents were given and a good time enjoyed by all.  The happy pair left at midnight for South Whitley, Ind. where they will spend some time visiting relatives of the groom.  Rev. I.L. Oakes, pastor of U.B. Church of Galion, Ohio, officiated.

Albert C. Lermann, assistant postmaster at Sandusky, and Miss Maggie Race, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Theodore Race, were married at high noon today at the bride's home on South Main Street in the presence of a number of invited guests.  Mr. & Mrs. Lermann leave this afternoon for their future home in Sandusky.

William B. Sheets of Jackson Township and Miss Effie Hacket of Lucas, were married Thursday, October 1, by Rev. George A. Lee at his residence on Park Avenue East.

MARRIED -- William Conn of Mifflin and Miss Kate Thrush of Mansfield, by Rev. F.P. Sanders at his residence, 135 South Diamond Street, Wednesday evening, October 9, 1895.

Miss Mina Altgeld of Washington Township, who was married on Wednesday to Shannon Steel of Bellville, is a sister of Governor Altgeld of Illinois.

PLYMOUTH -- Howard Majors and Dora Bowman were quietly married Sunday evening at the residence of W.A. Jeffrey.  The ceremony was performed by Rev. A.B. Wilson.

Augustus A. Douglass, having realized at last that "it is not good to live alone" has taken unto himself a wife.  At 8 o'clock last evening Mr. Douglass and Miss Ida Thompson repaired to the residence of the Rev. H.A. Sumrell where the marriage was privately solemnized.  Mr. Douglass is a member of the law firm of Douglass & Douglass, and is prosecuting attorney of Richland County.  Miss Thompson has been employed at the Boston Store, and has an extended acquaintance.  The couple will reside in the Carpenter-Ozier Block, and the verdict of the people will be "guilty of matrimony in the first degree, may you ever be happy."

A very quiet wedding was solemnized this morning at the Lutheran parsonage by Rev. H.L. Wiles.  The contracting parties were Albert Hautzenroeder and Miss Elizabeth Wagner.  Mr. Hautzenroeder is the eldest son of Leonard Hautzenroeder, of Hautzenroeder & Co., cigar manufacturers, for which firm Albert holds a position as bookkeeper.  Miss Wagner is the daughter of George Wagner, who formerly resided in this city.  Mr. Wagner was an employee of Tracy & Avery during his residence here, and now resides near Newark.

Wednesday -- Miss Lulu Coble and Bert Boyce of Shelby are to be married at that place tomorrow night.

MARRIED -- Wednesday, Oct. 2, a large number of kindred and friends assembled at the residence of Mr. & Mrs. Anna Boyce of Franklin Township to witness the marriage of their daughter, Ida M., to Samuel H. Kuhn, son of Mr. & Mrs. Peter Kuhn, of Jackson Township.  At high noon the organ pealed forth the wedding march, Miss Anna Kuhn, sister of the groom, being at the keys.  The groom was dressed in conventional black.  The bride's costume was a cream silk in diamond trimmings.  Rev. F.P. Banks of West Lafayette in a short and impressive ceremony solemnized and contract.  After hearty congratulations a bountiful repast was served and after a few hours were spent in mutual enjoyment and viewing the beautiful presents, the friends repaired to their respective homes.

A very pleasant marriage occurred Wednesday evening, at the parsonage of Dr. H.L. Wiles, of this city, the contracting parties being William W. Doolittle and Miss Sadie Hettler.   The bride has for the past five years been the organist of the Lutheran Church at Spring Mills and possesses many charming accomplishments and excellent traits of character.

The friends of Frank White, the Vennum Avenue bachelor, will be surprised to hear of his intended marriage.  The prospective bride resides near Plymouth.  The wedding will take place in January.

A quiet wedding ceremony was celebrated at St. Peter's Catholic Church, at 6 o'clock this morning by Rev. Andrew Maganhann.  The contracting parties were I. Edward Straub and Miss Helene Kaltenthaler.  The ceremony was private, those present beside the bride and groom being Miss Clara Kaltenthaler of Shelby, sister of the bride, and Peter Straub.  Mr. & Mrs. Straub left immediately for Washington, D.C. and a number of eastern points.  They will be at home to their friends after November 1 at 131 Park Avenue East.  Mrs. Straub is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Philip Kaltenthaler and is an accomplished young lady.  Mr. Straub is a compositor in the SHIELD office and the entire SHIELD force unites in extending him and his bride sincere congratulations.

Wednesday -- Hall Harroun and Miss Florence Bordner were united in marriage by Dr. J.W. Hubbell yesterday afternoon.

Wednesday -- Truman D. Smith of Crestline and Miss Plumea Bruce of this city were married by Dr. H.L. Wiles at 7:30 last night.

Thursday -- J. Fremont Warner of Bucyrus and Miss Georgie Casteel of this city were united in holy wedlock at high noon today by the Rev. H.L. Wiles, at the parsonage in the presence of a few of their most intimate friends.  The groom is a well known railway postal clerk on the P. Ft. W. & C. R.R., and is highly respected by all who knew him.  The bride is a charming and popular young lady and has a host of friends.  The bridal couple received a number of very beautiful presents.  Immediately after a wedding dinner at the home of George J. Floeck and wife on North Bowman Street the happy couple departed at 12:25 for Chicago and Milwaukee, where they will spend the first two weeks of their honeymoon.  On their return they will make their future home in Bucyrus, where they will be at home to their friends after Nov. 1.

Smith T. McMeeken and his newly wedded wife, nee Retta Kinton of Worthington Township, were in the city yesterday en route to the home of the groom's parents in Weller Township.  The marriage was consumated last Wednesday at the residence of the bride's parents, near Bunker Hill, the Rev. W.W. Anderson of Loudonville officiating, and the Rev. V.V. Henry of Plymouth assisting.

PLYMOUTH -- The wedding of A.M. Trago and Miss Lottie Johnson, daughter of Edward Johnson, will take place on Thursday evening.  Preparations have been made for a grand affair.

The wedding of Matthew L. Mitchell and Miss Luette Hersh, two well known young people of Hastings, occurred Thursday, Oct. 31, at 3 p.m.  The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Kramer of Perrysville, at the residence of the bride's parents, Mr. & Mrs. Newton Hersh, who reside two miles south of Lucas.  Only the immediate friends of the contracting parties witnessed the ceremony.  The host of friends of the happy couple extend congratulations.

LUCAS -- Alfred Scarbrough of Knox County and Miss Anna E. McCurdy of Davis P.O. were married at the Lutheran parsonage Thursday, by Rev. W.H. Dolbeer.

Mrs. Roberta Johnston, widow of the late Frank A. Johnston, was married Oct. 30 at the home of her mother, Mrs. Jane M. Wallace of Columbus, to Thomas Tracy Treff, a jeweler of that city.  Mr. & Mrs. Treff, after a bridal tour of the eastern cities, will be "at home" Dec. 1, at 80 West Third Ave., Columbus.

23 November 1895, Vol. LXXVIII, No. 28

PLYMOUTH -- Wednesday at 2 p.m. the wedding of William Monteith and Clara Trauger occurred at the home of the bride.  About 50 guests were in attendance.  Officiated by Rev. A.C. Miller of the Lutheran Church.  At 4 p.m. the bride and groom left for Columbus, Cincinnati and the Atlanta Exposition.  Upon their return they will occupy a newly finished home in Shelby where the groom has a good position as assistant treasurer of the steel tube works.

PLYMOUTH -- Thursday at 11 a.m., the marriage of Dr. J.T. Gaskill and Miss Laura Wilson took place at the home of the bride.  Rev. A.C. Miller officiated.  The wedding was strictly private.  The bridal party left at noon via Northern Ohio railroad for Findlay.  After a 10 days' visit at different places, they will make their home in Plymouth.

Bertram F. Mumm of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Miss Georgia B. Snyder were privately married at the home of John F. Mumm in Brooklyn, NY, Wednesday, Nov. 20, by Rev. Benjamin Tulloss, the bride's grandfather.  Benjamin Snyder, the bride's brother, was best man.  The groom is engaged in boat building and is wealthy.  Mrs. Mumm is the daughter of George W. Snyder, Erie freight agent here.  The happy couple will be at home, Tuesdays, after December 5, at 688 Tenth Street, Brooklyn.

Ammi F. Mitchell of Toledo and Miss Anna Florence Au of this city were married at 6 o'clock last evening at the bride's home on Park Avenue West by the Rev. Dr. J.W. Hubbell in the presence of immediate relatives and a few intimate friends of the bride.  Miss Au is the daughter of the late John Au, is a graduate of the high school of this city, since which time until the beginning of the present term she was a teacher in the public schools.  Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell left last night for their future home in Toledo.

Plymouth -- Alice, elder daughter of Dr. T.S. Seeley, of Norwalk, was married last week.  The Seeleys were formerly residents of Plymouth, where they still have many friends.

Thursday (12/5/1895) -- Elgin M. Parker and Miss Marguerite Kissane, whose approaching nuptials was mentioned by the SHIELD a few days ago, will be married Wednesday evening, December 18.  The wedding will be solemnized at the church and will be strictly private.  They will reside temporarily with the groom's parents, Mr. & Mrs. John W. Parker, at 90 South Foster Street.  (later in the paper, it is mentioned that Miss Kissane was the daughter of P.T. Kissane of Wayne Street, and that she was employed as an operator at the telephone exchange)

Friday (12/6/1895) -- William P. Kyner of near Lexington and Miss Ella M. Kegg, of this city, were united in marriage by the Rev. George H. Reen, Wednesday evening, Nov. 27, in the study of St. Luke's Lutheran Church.

Marriages solemnized recently by Dr. H.L. Wiles ... William J. Orock and Miss Mary Krohmer were married at the Lutheran Parsonage, Tuesday, Dr. H.L. Wiles officiating.  David A. Dolbs and Miss Alice Sainer were united in marriage by Dr. Wiles at the parsonage Wednesday evening.  Frederick Zellner and Miss Letta M. Jennings were married at the same time and place as were Bert Allen and Elza B. Jarvis and Arthur D. Etzwiler and Miss Edith Longsdorf, Dr. Wiles officiating.  Clyde A. Pittenger and Miss Anna C. Daup were united in marriage by Dr. Wiles at the parsonage Thursday evening.

Miss Ellen Irene Madden of this city and Edwin J. Kirkland of Crestline, were united in marriage at the residence of Squire Kirkland of the latter place last night.  They will reside at Crestline.

Maud C., daughter of Charles E. Miller, formerly of Sturges Avenue, this city, but now of Cleveland, will be united in marriage tomorrow evening at 7:30 o'clock to Alfred Collings of Cleveland.  He is a young man of sterling character who has been in the employ of the State National Bank for several years.  Only the immediate relatives of the contracting parties are invited.

At 6 o'clock lat evening at the home of the bride's sister, Mrs. A.H. Au, 326 West Bloom Street, occurred the marriage of Miss Bird Elizabeth Wood, of this city, and Clarence Vinton Sawhill of Toledo.  The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Duston Kemble.  Miss Lou Wood of Mansfield assisted as bridesmaid and Roy Engel of Cleveland was best man.  The bride and groom were the recipients of many beautiful and costly presents.  Among those present at the wedding were:  Mrs. Elizabeth Wood of Mansfield;  Mr. & Mrs. J.M. Sawhill of Ontario;  Mr. & Mrs. Vertue of Lykens;  Miss Edith Sawhill of Chicago;  J.R. McKnight of Norwalk;  J.B. Crabtree of Albany, NY;  Miss Margaret Hagadorn of Toledo;  George e. O'Bryon of Toledo;  Mr. & Mrs. C.M. Jolly of Ontario;  Mr. & Mrs. Traxler of Butler;  Mr. & Mrs. J.M. McGee of Zanesville;  Roy Engel of Cleveland;  Miss Jennette Hagadorn of Ontario;  Mrs. C. Au, Mrs. Charles Stentz and Albert Sawhill, all of Mansfield.  After the ceremony an elaborate dinner was served, after which the guests departed wishing the bride and groom every happiness.  Mr. & Mrs. Sawhill after a reception tomorrow at Mr. Sawhill's old home in Ontario, will start on a wedding tour through the south, visiting Chattanooga, Mammoth Cave, Atlanta Exposition and other points of interest.

Frank C. Alger and Miss Mayme C. Beck were married at the home of the bride's father, N.J. Beck of Wood Street, Tuesday evening.  The ceremony was performed by Dr. D.J. Meese in the presence of only the immediate relatives of the bride and groom.  Mr. & Mrs. Alger will reside temporarily with the bride's parents.

George Englebrecht and Miss Katherine L. Proctor were quietly married at the home of the bride's parents on Poplar Street, Tuesday evening.  The bride's father, Rev. F.M. Proctor performed the ceremony.

Benjamin F. Traxler and Miss Lulu Plank of Butler were married at 4:30 .m. Tuesday, by the Rev. Duston Kemble.

George Brooker and Miss Sarah R. Ernst embarked upon the shifting sea of conjugal happiness Tuesday evening, Dr. Kemble performing the ceremony.

Harry Hummer and Miss Teresa Shreiner were united in marriage by Rev. Kemble at the parsonage Tuesday evening.

The marriage of Irwin A. Moffett and Miss Lillie Bell, both of Hayesville, was solemnized at the home of Rev. F.C. Wolf of South Main Street yesterday.

Frank Rhean and Miss Agnes Vallance, both of Shelby, were united in marriage by Dr. H.L. Wiles at the Lutheran parsonage yesterday.

As predicted in the SHIELD some time ago, Elgin M. Parker and Miss Marguerite Kissane were united in marriage at the Methodist parsonage last night, Rev. Duston Kemble officiating. Both young people are well known and begin their voyage upon the sea of matrimony with the best wishes of their many friends.  Mr. Parker is the son of John W. Parker, a harness-maker in the employ of F.W. Durno, and Miss Kissane is the daughter of P.T. Kissane of Wayne Street.  The happy couple will reside with the groom's parents on South Foster Street.

Miss Wilda Craig, formerly of this city, and Lewis A. Ewing, of Boulder, Col., were married at Denver, Col., Nov. 24, by the Rev. D.J. Rankin at the residence of the latter.  They are now living in Sunset, Col., but their future home will be in Denver.  Mr. Ewing formerly lived at Hayesville and his mother and sister resided in this city several years.  He is now interested in gold and silver mining in Colorado.
