Attack on Lincoln A. Wagenhals

Source:  Richland Shield & Banner:  27 April 1895, Vol. LXXVII, No. 50

The atrocious crime perpetrated upon Lincoln A. Wagenhalls [Wagenhals], manager of the "Young Mrs. Winthrop" company at Memorial Opera House, Thursday night, March 14, was one of the most daring and audacious attempts at highway robbery ever committed in this city.

From the beginning it was believed that the crime was committed by home desperadoes who were acquainted with all of the surroundings of the opera house.  After no evidence could be found against those first arrested on suspicion and subsequently discharged it was believed that the perpetrators of the crime would never be apprehended and in that event some who are or have been stage hands about the opera house would always have been regarded with suspicion.

In ferreting out the guilty ones credit reflects upon J.C. Laser and the present city authorities who independently began working on the case at opposite points and in tracing crimes came together in a sensational disclosure of facts which led to the arrest of Ed. and Albert Ackerman and Sherman Barron.

Barron's open confession of his complicity in the affair dispels all doubts that at least one of the guilty parties has been captured.  His admission that he struck Mr. ?Wagenhals and the declaration that it was Albert Ackerman who "tipped off" the victim when he came out of the opera house and that it was Ed. Ackerman who did the shooting seems to have satisfied the public that he is telling the truth.

Until the plea in abatement and motion to quash the indictment interposed by counsel for the Ackermans have been heard and disposed of by the court, the accused will not be arraigned.  If the plea and motion are not sustained the Ackermans will probably have their trial the first week in May.

Ed. Ackerman Sherman Barron
