BELLVILLE

Mr. John Fry, who lives one mile west of this place, met with quite a loss Sunday by having two hogs killed by the cars.

At the Lutheran parsonage, by Rev. J.N. Barnett, on Wednesday evening May 8, were united in marriage Mr. Clyde S. Flaharty of Bellville, and Miss Ella B. Snyder of Johnsville.

Miss Verda Shafer has resumed work at this office after a couple week's illness.

Mr. A.L. Walker was absent last week on a business trip through the western part of the state.

Misses Minnie Zellner and Cora A. Bixler, of Mansfield, were the guests of their parents over Sunday last.

Wm. Malott now occupies his new home northeast of town.  Mr. Malott very justly feels proud of his residence.

Mr. W. Miller, of the firm of Carlin & Miller, spent Sunday last at his home in Newark, returned to Bellville Monday.

Mrs. Mary Campbell, who was taken seriously ill a couple weeks since with the chills and fever, is reported improving at this writing.

Mrs. Mary Parker and Rosa White were in Mansfield last Friday.

Misses Jennie Sherrow and Lilly Steltz were in Mansfield on Friday of last week.

C.C. Shafer, a prominent farmer residing near Fairview, this county, is now reported to be dangerously sick.

Charles Huber, of Shelby, Democratic candidate for the office of county recorder, was in Bellville Monday.

Albert Lanehart, of Butler, has announced his candidacy for the office of sheriff.  Mr. Lanehart was a former citizen of Bellville and he has many friends here who wish him well in his canvass.

County Clerk-Elect William O'Hearn, at a hearing in probate court Saturday morning, was declared insane and ordered taken to the Toledo Asylum for the Insane.  The patient had just been returned from a private sanitarium at Cincinnati where the incurable nature of his malady had been made apparent.  It is a peculiarly sad case and friends of the family over the county extend their sympathy.  Mr. O'Hearn's condition will doubtless necessitate the election of a new clerk.

Davis Ruhl, of near Darlington, was the guest of his sister, Mrs. Lottie Bixler, last Sunday.

George Charles, of Washington Township, we regret to learn, is lying quite dangerously sick with lung fever at present.  Mr. Charles has been sick for sometime past.

Mr. Samuel Carlin, whose severe illness and partial recovery was mentioned in last week's paper, we regret to learn, is again reported quite seriously sick with poor prospects for a speedy recovery.

Sunday's OHIO STATE JOURNAL says five terms expired yesterday, among them that of Peter Ackerman, who was the most noted.  He was sent in from Richland County to serve a 10-year sentence for arson, having fired the Mansfield City prison.  He was partially insane when he came, but an operation recently made at the prison hospital removing a section of his skull around a gunshot wound, rendered him rational again.

Samuel Fisher has returned from an extended business trip after an absence of several days.

Mr. and Mrs. Madison Gatton and daughter Artie, visited at the home of Elias Hunter and family, Sunday.

Ed. Russell, well known in this place, is now serving a 46 days sentence in the Canton work house.  

The local G.A.R. Post has appointed the following committee of arrangements for the Decoration Day services and their program will be duly published:  J.B. Edwards, S.W. Bixler, H. Johns and Jas. Swonger.

BUTLER

Miss May Andrews of Garrett, Ind., is spending a short time here visiting relatives.

Mr. J.B. Neal drove through to West Salem last Wednesday, where he will remain a week or so.

Mrs. U. Moore and Miss Blanche Hess visited friends in Bellville, Saturday.

Mrs. I. Hess did shopping at Mt. Vernon, Tuesday.

Misses Lovetta Miller and Vernia Fitterer spent Wednesday with E.A. Plank's.

J.L. Barr, M.L. Mitchell, Sam'l Spayde and Mr. Ewalt wheeled to Bellville Friday evening, returning "rather early" next morning.

Miss Maude Swearingen, of Mansfield, visited with her parents over Sunday.

Mrs. Ellen Hess and daughter Mabel, are the guests of Mrs. Neal this week.

Miss Anna Bowman went to Mt. Vernon where she will do domestic work.

Mr. and Mrs. Hulbert Hoover attended the funeral of a sister of Mrs. H., at Mansfield, the 8th.

Miss Olive Robinson and Miss Lucy Lahman attended the teacher's institute at Mansfield Saturday.

Zeph Steward is setting out quite an extensive strawberry patch.

Miss Snavely is doing housework for Mrs. Albert Black.

W.E. Freehafer has secured a position as clerk in a grocery store at Mansfield.

Jacob Stelts is in poor health, the result of a tumorous disorder. 

PLEASANT HALL

G.W. Charles is quite sick at present.

Jacob Stelts is quite poorly at this writing.

Born to Henry Spayde and wife, a daughter on the 5th.

Miss Lizzie Maglott was sewing for Mrs. James Robinson last week.

Jerry Tinkey and family Sundayed with their daughter, Mrs. Baughman, west of town.

Miss Cora Morgan, daughter of W.H. Morgan of Darke Co., O., is visiting with friends in this vicinity.

Otis Miller and family from near Lexington and Walter Fleming was the guest of Mr. Frank Fulton's on the 12th.

Mrs. Warner Young and daughter, of Utah, were the guests of relatives last week in this place.

Albert Diehl and wife attended the funeral of his sister, Mrs. Markley, at Mansfield last Wednesday.  Dropsy caused her death.

An infant child of J.F. Morgan died May 8th., aged 1 month and 4 days.  The funeral services were conducted at his residence by Revs. W.H. and W.S. Morgan on Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m.

BANGORVILLE

John Hissong visited friends at Westfield, O., recently.

J.H. Tidd is going in the berry business.

James Brink, of Holmes County, visited with J.F. Borden a few days last week.

S.W. Erow was in this vicinity Monday on business.

Frank Black is working on William Zolman's saw mill this summer.

Hoy Shaffer, who is working for H. Zigler this summer, got his face badly poisoned last week.

Isaiah Dyer shot a horn owl last Wednesday that measured five feet from tip to tip.

MT. CARMEL

Miss Sylvia Swank is working L.V. Kochheiser's at present.

Mr. and Mrs. Thad Kell and daughter, Olive, A.B. Leedy and H. Kirkpatrick dined at J.L. Swank's on the 5th.

E.W. Yarger is able to work again.

Jacob Swank is adorning his yard with a handsome picket fence which adds very materially to his surroundings.

Mr. and Mrs. E.M. Kirkpatrick spent last Sunday at W.L. Long's.

E.L. Swank and wife visited E.S. Leedy's near Fredericktown, on the 4th. or 5th.

H.H. Burkholder is placing a neat picket fence around and otherwise improving their country residence.

Prof. Lanehart, Supt. of the Martell schools, spent Saturday and Sunday with his family here.

Jacob Swank and wife visited at Jessie McMillin's on the 12th.

Wm. Donaugh Jr. and Miss McDanel, J.S. Garber and family, E.L. Swank and wife, J.A. Bierly, H. Kirkpatrick and Dr. Garber were pleasantly entertained at A.B. Leedy's on the 12th.

J.A. Swank and family and Bert Shrader's were guests of Mrs. Shrader on last Sunday.

Mr. and Mrs. C.W. Gatton were guests at H.M. McCuen's on Sunday last.

LEXINGTON

Charley Strausbaugh, of Mansfield, was the guest of his sister, Mrs. Pollock, Sunday.

John Doty is home from Canal Fulton.

Prof. Phelps, Principal, has been hired for two years at an advanced salary.

Chas. Carey of Mansfield, was assisting his friends Mrs. Coleman and daughter, last week.

Harry Smith, our talented young machinist will have completed three of the bicycles on his order this week.

Mr. David Williams is somewhat better at this writing.

Mr. and Mrs. Lafferty, of Bellville, spent Sunday with their children, Prof. H.H. Phelps and wife.

Miss Carrie Shafer returned Monday to her work in Mansfield.

Will Smurr is home with his mother and sisters after an absence of a number of years.  The family held a reunion Thursday.

Misses Carrie Earhart and Spencer have opened an ice cream parlor in the Buckingham block.

Miss Edith Yarger went to Mansfield Monday to enter the employ of Mrs. Tracy.
