02 April 1887, Vol. LXIX, No. 36

Independence.  Wesley Fike and Miss Lillie Daugherty were married at the M.P. church Wednesday evening by Rev. W.G. Scott.  The church was crowded and quite a number of immediate friends from a distance were present.  Prominent among them we noticed Mr. Lynn LeFevre and Miss Nealie Moore, Mr. Ad. Shaffer and Miss Lou LeFevre, of Bellville.

Sand Hill, Monroe Township.  Born to Mr. & Mrs. Grau, a son -- which survived only about twenty-four hours.  On last Sabbath morning at the residence of G.M. Grau, Rev. Sikes, of Perrysville, made a few very appropriate remarks on the occasion, after which the babe was interred in Mt. Zion Cemetery.  Mr. & Mrs. Grau have the sympathy of the entire community.

Washington.  Born March 19th., to Mr. & Mrs. John Boden, a 10 pound girl.

Washington.  Albert Lehnhart, aged 16 years, youngest son of Peter Lehnhart, living in the south-eastern part of the township, died last Saturday after a short illness, of inflammation of the bowels.  He was buried in the German Lutheran Cemetery on Sunday.

The funeral of little Mamie Hale, who died from the effects of the operation to remove the bean from her windpipe, at the Cleveland hospital last Friday morning, was held on last Sunday from the residence of her parents on South Main Street.

Among the patents granted last week was one to David Lippy, of this city, for a cash carrier apparatus.

C.B. McKee, a former resident of this vicinity, died last Monday at New Concord of consumption.  He was formerly editor of the New Concord Enterprise.

Mrs. Ann Roberts died at her residence near Shelby, on March 25th., aged 98 years and 14 days.  She was the oldest pioneer resident of Sharon Township, and there are yet living 8 of her children, 23 grand-children, 24 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Miss Mamie Cappeller, daughter of W.S. Cappeller of the News, and Mr. Chas. E. Miller were married at the home of the bride in Cumminsville, near Cincinnati, Tuesday evening.

Katie Reiff wants legal separation from John Reiff and restoration to her maiden name because John won't buy her bread.  The couple were married in August, 1884, at Shelby.  F.F. Douglass is plaintiff's attorney.

The following persons during the last week were granted their final naturalization papers.  Deputy Kelley swore them to "absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to every foreign prince, potentate, state or sovereignty, and vote the Democratic ticket for the rest of their natural lives."   Peter Kell, Joseph Klesznski, Harmon Diskowski, Chas. DIED -- Esther Brandt, wife of John Wolf, was born Nov. 15, 1812.  Died March 5, 1887.  Aged 74 years, 3 months and 20 days.  She leaves a husband, three sons and three daughters to mourn their loss, but her gain.  Four children have preceded her to the spirit world.  She leaves fourteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.  For 51 years she has lived a Christian life.  She was an extremely kind mother and loved by all who knew her. <<poetry omitted>>

Charles Ringle, aged 17, brother of S.A. Ringle, of this city, died on Wednesday at his father's residence near Greenwich.

It becomes our sad duty this week to record the death of our old friend, William Piper, who died last Saturday morning at his home in Washington Township, aged 75 years, 3 months and 23 days.  Mr. Piper was born in Cumberland County, Pa., and moved to Ohio with his parents in 1824, and settled on the farm where he has lived continuously ever since coming to this State.  He married Martha Kerr in 1836.  They were the parents of six children, four of whom are now living.  Mr. Piper was always a staunch Democrat and had been a subscriber of the SHIELD for about 50 years.  For 25 consecutive years prior to his death the Democracy of Washington Tp. had elected him to the office of constable.    The funeral took place on Monday, the 4th., and the remains were interred in the Mansfield Cemetery, the services being conducted by the Congregational pastor of Lexington.  The cause of Mr. Piper's death was kidney disease.  He had been unwell for several months but was confined to his bed but about two days before his death.  In the death of Mr. Piper his community loses a good citizen.

Wm. T. Hamilton, of Mansfield, Robt. B. Mickey of Shelby, and Frederick McCurron, of Shiloh, have been granted pensions.  Isaac W. Witmeyer's pension has been increased and Valentine Denny of Shreve has been granted a reissue.

Adario -- Walt Buzzard says it's a boy and he is afraid it will be a Democrat.

Independence.  Amanda Wareham was buried in the Zion Cemetery, at Four Corners, Thursday of last week.  Her malady was dropsy.

Independence.  Sarah Chadwick died Monday night, aged 84 years past, at the residence of John Andrews, south of town.  Her remains were interred in the Independence cemetery Wednesday forenoon, the funeral services being conducted by Rev. W.O. Scott.

Independence.  It is with pleasure we announce the marriage of Biddison Simmons to Miss Irene Sharpe, of near Fredericktown, at the residence of Dr. Hosack Thursday evening of last week.  We congratulate Mrs. Simmons upon her good judgment in the choice she has made for a life partner, as Mr. Simmons is numbered among our most promising young men.

Independence.  Mrs. John Kanaga died Saturday afternoon and was buried in the Zion cemetery, Four Corners, Sunday afternoon.  The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J.W. Walkey.

Shelby.  Born on Monday, April 4, to Mr. & Mrs. Fred. Mickey, a daughter.

Washington.  Mr. J. Sell and family attended the funeral of his mother near Bellville, the 7th.  A stroke of the palsy was the cause of her death.

Sand Hill, Monroe Township.  The wife of Samuel Sharrick has so nearly lost her mind that it is necessary that she be taken to the insane asylum.

Independence.  Mrs. Sarah Buhecker, wife of john Buhecker, who died in child-birth last Sunday morning, was buried at Ankenytown on Tuesday.

Independence.  E.J. Woodham and family will start for Fergus Fall, Minn., on Tuesday next, where Mr. Woodham contemplates going into the wholesale furniture business.  The many very warm friends of the Woodhams in this vicinity will be sorry to see them depart from our midst.  But Mr. Woodham is a very stirring business man;  consequently it is necessary for him to seek a wider and larger field to work in than is here afforded.  Success to you, Mr. W.

Independence.  Catharine Hays, the aged mother of Wm. Hays, east of town, died Wednesday night of last week and was buried at Bunker Hill on Friday, her funeral services being conducted by Rev. W.O. Scott.

Independence.  Wilson Shirey and Mary Smith were united in marriage Thursday night of last week by Rev. W.O. Scott.

Lexington.  The funeral of Joseph Boals, Ex-County Commissioner, took place in the Lexington Cemetery on last Saturday p.m.  A large concourse of friends accompanied the remains to the last resting place.  Mr. Boals was a soldier of the Mexican war and was one of the number who had fought valiantly in many bloody contests and did great credit to himself and his country.  His family has the sympathy of their many friends in their bereavement.

Shelby.  The marriage of Chas. Herbolt, of Galion, to Miss Hattie Hacket, of Shiloh, was solemnized at the Lutheran parsonage by Rev. M.L. Kunkelman, on Tuesday evening, April 12.

MARRIED -- CARR-KIRKPATRICK -- In this city, March 6, at the pastor's study, in the Congregational church, Harry W. Carr and Miss Sadie B. Kirkpatrick.

MARRIED -- KEITH-GANDERT -- April 11th., 1887, by Justice Sibbett, at his office on West Market St., Mr. Elmore E. Keith to Miss Anna A. Gandert.

Elmore Keith and Anna Bird, the divorced wife of Jerry Bird, were married on last Monday by Squire Sibbett.

John W. Mohler, of this city, has been granted a pension.

That venerable and esteemed couple, Squire Lowry Sibbett and wife, will celebrate the 50th. anniversary of their marriage on the 8th. of May.  Squire Sibbett and wife came to Mansfield in 1841 from Bedford County, Pa., and have therefore resided here for 46 years.

On Tuesday last as Wm. Reed was engaged in ditching for Infirmary Director John Dennis on the latter's farm in the southeast part of Madison Township, he came upon a human skeleton, resembling that of an Indian, 2½ feet beneath the surface of the ground.

Mr. Joseph Boals, of Troy Township, died suddenly of heart disease Thursday of last week.  Mr. Boals, although affected with spells of heart trouble for a long time, was going about his usual avocations until last Thursday evening when he dropped dead in his orchard.  He was alone at the time and his dead body was found later in the evening.  Mr. Boals was one of the most highly respected citizens of Richland County.  He was County Commissioner two terms some years ago and filled the office with rare ability and to the entire satisfaction of the people.  He was a staunch Democrat and a firm friend of the SHIELD AND BANNER.  His age was about 70 years.  His funeral took place on Saturday and the interment was made in the Lexington cemetery.

Independence.  Mrs. Clate Phillips died of consumption Thursday of last week.  Rev. W.O. Scott, of this place, conducted her funeral, which took place on Saturday.

Independence.  Thos. Ross, who has been ill of consumption for some time, died Saturday and was buried at Bunker Hill on Monday.  The funeral was conducted by Rev. Henry Keller.

Independence.  Frank Andrews and Flora McClellan were married at the Lutheran parsonage in Mansfield by Rev. Wiles Friday night of last week.  As Rip Van Winkle would say, "Long may they live and prosper!"

Independence.  Mrs. David Leedy died Sunday forenoon.  She had been ailing for a long time.  Her obsequies took place at Ankenytown on Tuesday, conducted by Rev. A.A. Cober.  May she rest in peace.

Lexington.  Henry Strome, who has been residing on the farm owned by Thomas Brown, south of town, while felling a tree, was struck by a limb and instantly killed.  In his endeavor to get away from the falling timber he ran directly under the limb, which fell from the topmost part o the tree.  Mr. Strome was a young married man and was known as a respectable and hard working man.  He leaves a wife and two sisters to mourn his loss.  His remains were interred in the Shafer Cemetery near Bellville.

Lexington.  The remains of Benjamin Kauffman, an inmate of the County Infirmary, was brought to this place on last Saturday and interred in the Lexington Cemetery on Sunday at 2 p.m.  He was about 80 years of age.

Lexington.  The wedding of our young friend, Mr. John Brown, to Miss Ella, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. H.R. Elliott, of Fredericktown, occurred at the residence of the latter April 20.  About 75 responded to the invitations by giving their presence.  This large number of friends were made most cordially welcome by the host and hostess, who understand perfectly the secret of "how to entertain".  Mr. & Mrs. Brown received a number of beautiful and valuable presents.  The ceremony was performed by Rev. Ferguson, of Plymouth, who makes mirth the characteristic feature of all such occasions.  Among the guests invited from Lexington were the family of Mr. Wm. Brown, Sr., Mr. & Mrs. W.H. Cleland, Mr. & Mrs. Eugene Dunshee.  Mr. Browns enters upon life with many bright prospects and has the hearty congratulations of his numerous friends to attend him and his estimable in their new home in Bellville, where he is engaged in hardware business.

DIED -- In Springfield Township, two miles south of Ontario, April 21st., 1887, John N. Kline, aged 41 years, 8 months and 27 days.

Mr. Isaac Dryfuss, father of Mrs. C.M. Miller, of this city, died at his home in Fremont on Thursday.

Pensions were granted last week to Samuel Edleman, of Mansfield;  Wm. Styert, of Pavonia;  and Jacob Leyman, of Bellville.

Lizzie E. Lee was granted a divorce and $200 alimony from her husband, Erie Lee, last Saturday.  Ophelia Shafer was granted a divorce and $1,200 alimony from E.W. Shafer at the same time.

Mrs. Joseph Roe, of West Market St., died at her home on Tuesday about midnight, at the age of 67 years.  The deceased was the mother of Dr. C.M. and J.A. Roe, of this city.  The funeral will take place on Saturday.

It seems that while Sam Stock, the music dealer, was west he did a very sensible thing.  He married Miss Emma McGuire, of this city, who has been visiting at Chicago for several months.  The couple will reside in this city.

Enos Miles, the venerable book agent, who resided on East John Street, died at his home on Thursday evening at the age of 70 years.  The deceased leaves a wife and three children.  The funeral will take place Sunday at 2 p.m.

Mr. Cassius C. Baxter and Miss Lillie M. Cassell, daughter of Lewis Cassell, of Bellville, were married on Wednesday noon at the home of the bride's parents and in the presence of a few friends.  The couple came to this city and attended the wedding of Mr. E.D. Baxter and Miss Mary Simpson, daughter of Prof. John Simpson, on Thursday at twelve o'clock, at the residence of the bride's parents on West First Street.  After a brilliant reception during the evening at the elegant home of Prof. Simpson, which was attended by a large number of invited guests, the happy newly wedded quartette left for Washington, D.C., and other eastern cities on a bridal tour.
