05 February 1887, Vol. LXIX, No. 28

Independence.  A.J. Myers, Esq., tied his first matrimonial knot Wednesday night of last week in the marriage of David Dyer, of Bellville, and Miss Louettie Nichols, of this vicinity.

Shelby.  Born to Mr. & Mrs. Kennedy, near Taylortown, on Tuesday, Feb. 1st., a pair of twin boys.

Bellville.  The people of this place were shocked last Saturday evening by the announcement of the sudden death of Frank Greeley.  He was a young and vigorous man and seemingly in excellent health, had chopped wood most of the day, eaten a hearty supper and laid down on a sofa to rest.  His sister noticed something unusual in his breathing, went to him and found him gasping for breath.  She called for assistance and Dr. McMahan, who lives only two doors away, hastened to the scene, but was too late to do anything for the dying man, who expired just as he arrived.  Other physicians were called and every effort made to resuscitate him but without avail.  A post mortem was held on Sunday afternoon.  The stomach was found to be distended to three times its natural size, which caused it to crowd the heart and, in the position he was lying, to interfere with its action.  The funeral took place from the Presbyterian church on Monday afternoon.  The services were conducted by rev. J.F. Sponseller.

Bellville.  A quiet wedding took place at the residence of J.O. Miles on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 3rd., when Mr. Wm. Piper was united in marriage to Miss Ida, adopted daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Miles.  The ceremony was performed by Rev. W.W. Anderson.

Springfield Township.  Mrs. Rachel Saunders died Saturday night, January 22nd., of pneumonia, aged 78 years and three months.  About two weeks ago she contracted a very severe cold and a week ago last Friday took worse, the cold settling on the lungs.  Not until the following Wednesday, however, were serious doubts entertained of her recovery, but from that time on until her death ensued the circle of friends patiently awaited the closing of her long career.  Mrs. Saunders was born in Shenandoah Co., Va., and lived there until she was 22 years of old. [sic.]  At the age of 20 she was married to Thomas Saunders and two years later they moved to Richland County, living first on what is known as the Bell farm on the Mansfield-Galion road, and latterly for forty years or more on the homestead near Cookton.  The death, although occurring at an advanced age, has plunged the whole community in sorrow, for to know Mrs. Saunders was to know a woman of sterling character and Christian charity.  To Mr. Saunders the loss of his partner in joy and sorrow for the last 58 years is a loss which the extreme kindness of both friends and neighbors cannot assuage.  The funeral Tuesday at 10 a.m. was largely attended, despite the bad roads.  Rev. Barrow officiated.  The remains were interred in the Shelby cemetery.  Thus at the portals of the tomb, may we bid farewell to the well-spent life of one who was a mother to the motherless and a firm friend to every one.  Mr. James Saunders and son, of Indiana, brother and nephew of Mr. Saunders, Mr. Peer, of Ashland, and Frank Gove, of Cleveland, were strangers from a distance present at the funeral.   [*Name of Mr. Peer corrected from "Beer" to "Peer" as indicated by the 12 February 1887 edition]

Barbara Swigart, who died in Lucas on the 6th. inst., was born in Washington County, Pa., on the 8th. day of December, 1797.  She was the daughter of Jacob and Mary Young, of Orange Township, Ashland County, O.  Her youth was spent in Columbiana County, this State.  She united in marriage to John Swigart on the 29th. day of February, 1816, and settled in Stark County where she resided about three years.  They then moved to Orange Township, Ashland County , here they resided about two years, after which she and her husband settled in Monroe Tp., Richland Count, on what is now known as the old Kaylor farm, having ever since been a resident of said township.  She raised a family of 10 children, six sons and four daughters, and had at the time of her death 52 grand-children, 49 great-grand-children, and 6 great-great-grandchildren.  Her late years were spent in Lucas.  She was a great sufferer from a scrofulous disease for years, which she bore with great patience;  a helpless imbecile child having also been under her constant care for forty years, receiving the most loving and tender attentions from her kind motherly hands.  Her children are all yet living, except one son who died in youth.  Mother Swigart was always a most industrious, devoted and exemplary woman seeking always to do good to those around her.  Truly can it be recorded of her that hers was the life of a Christian and as such providence had lengthened her life of usefulness to almost 90 years.  Few indeed attain this age.  She united with the Lutheran church at Mt. Zion, near Lucas, at the age of 25 years (Rev. David Shew, pastor), being a faithful member while circumstances permitted her to attend.  She was buried at the Pleasant Valley Cemetery beside her loved companion, who preceded her about 16 years beyond the mystic Jordan.  Rev. Mitterling conducted the funeral exercises, preaching from Job:  "All my appointed days will I wait till my change comes."
