The killing of Tobias Cline, of the firm of Cline & Hamblin, the contractors, near the Bloom Street crossing on the P.F.W. & C. railway by the switch engine at shortly after eight o'clock Thursday evening, is the last of the many recent fatalities occurring along that line within a half mile east of the union depot.  His mangled body was not found until the crew on the engine were returning from the Strong & Leiter warehouse, where it had pushed a number of empty cars, and consequently the remains were passed over twice, as the engine ran backwards, with the men, who discovered the accident, sitting on the pilot.  Mr. Cline's watch and chain were found at the Bloom Street crossing and it is evident that he stepped upon the track at that point to walk down the road towards his home, and after being struck was dragged to where found.  He had just returned from Marion, where he had been to purchase macadam for the Wood Street improvement, in which he was last engaged.  Mr. Cline was one of our best and most valuable citizens, and his death is universally lamented.  The funeral of the deceased takes place today from his late residence at No. 116 East Third Street.

On Wednesday evening Ben. Hurxthall, Jr. and Miss Myrta Marshall, both of this city, were married at the residence of the bride's brother, Geo. R. Marshall, on Wood Street.  Rev. J.W. Hubbell performed the ceremony.  After an elegant repast Mr. & Mrs. Hurxthall took their departure for a trip to Philadelphia and other eastern points, and will return by Nov. 1, when they will be at home to their friends at No. 26 Park Avenue West.  The wedding presents were extremely fine.

A sudden and rather peculiar death befell John Agan, of this city, near Newark Sunday morning.  He has been in the employ of the A.-T. Company as a boiler maker and on last Saturday drew his wages and left home to visit a cousin and look for winter employment at the above place.  To husband his earnings he climbed upon the top of the baggage car of the B.&O. night express and on its arrival at Newark the body of the young man was found mangled and still lying on the car, having been struck by an overhead bridge, it is supposed, while sitting up on the car.  Blood was found on several of the rear coaches, carried back by the high rate of speed of the train.  Sheriff B. Flannery, his uncle, and with whom he lived until about two years ago, brought the body home after it had been identified at the inquest made at Newark on Sunday, and the funeral was held from St. Peter's Catholic Church Tuesday morning.  The young man was about 21 years old and was the partial support of his mother, who lives on West Johns Street.  He was formerly a telegraph operator.

It is with sincere sorrow that we record this week the death of one of the SHIELD'S most esteemed and valued employees, Mr. William D. Cope, who passed away Thursday morning at 9 o'clock, after a long illness at his home on the corner of West Fourth and Walnut Streets, aged 39 years, 5 months and 12 days.  He died in the house in which he was born and in which he had lived nearly all his life.  He was a son of Franklin E. Cope, one of our pioneer citizens who died a few years ago.  By his death his wife and two children are bereft of a good and kind husband and father.  He leaves also a brother, Jos. A. Cope, and a sister, Mrs. A.C. Patterson.  Consumption was the cause of his death.  Although this dread disease had been making its insidious approach for a long time, he did not relinquish his "case" in the office until about the 1st. of last May, since which time he gradually failed, although able to be up and around much of the time during the summer.  Although well known that he could not recover, it was not thought that death was so near until within a few hours of the end.  He passed away easily and seemed entirely resigned to his fate.  Mr. Cope was one of our best citizens and was highly respected by all his acquaintances.  Every one had a good word for Billy Cope.  He spent the last three years in the SHIELD office, where by his faithfulness to his duties and his pleasant ways he always had the highest esteem of his employer and fellow workmen.  We shall sadly miss him.  The funeral will take place today (Saturday) at 2 p.m. from his late residence.  The services will be conducted by Rev. G.W. Huddleston, of the M.E. Church.

It seems that all the papers were in error as to the oldest person who attended the recent meeting of the pioneers of Richland County on the fairgrounds.  The oldest pioneer was Samuel Bennett, of Weller Tp., who will be 90 years old on the 22d. of this month.  His wife, Louisa Bennett, is 81 years of age.

The wife of Sam Cross, "the homeliest man in Richland County" and who aspires to be a "tuff", left his home at Shelby recently and, owing to his demonstrations towards her since, she sought to institute an inquest of lunacy against her spouse, but the same failed from her own testimony.  The wife is only extremely jealous of "Daisy" as her husband is commonly called.

The funeral of Tobias Cline, who was accidentally run down and killed by the yard engine on the P.F.W. & C. last week, occurred on Sunday afternoon from his late residence on East Third Street and was largely attended.  Dr. H.L. Wiles officiated at the ceremonies.  Fifty-three relatives, a number of them from a distance, were present.  Coroner Mecklem, of Lucas, conducted a post mortem on Monday and found that deceased met an accidental death in accordance with the circumstances set forth in our last issue.

H. McLaughlin in the presence of a very large and sympathizing congregation.  Text:  Philippians, 1st. chapter and 23d. verse;  after which his remains were laid away in the cemetery connected with the church to wait the resurrection morn.

A marriage license issued in the Probate Court on Monday to John Rhinehart and Margaret Goldsmith was, on application of Wm. Kooken, of this place.  The ceremony was performed by Rev. Dr. Bland, of the M.E. Church, of Chicago, in the presence of immediate friends and relatives.  The couple on Wednesday left for Fort Worth, Texas, where they will make their future home.  Dr. Purdy, it will be remembered, married Mrs. Frank Ward, of this city, last spring, but she died soon after their marriage.

The funeral of Wm. D. Cope, last Saturday afternoon, was attended by a large number of sympathizing friends, among whom were a goodly number of the printers of the city.  Editors and printers of the SHIELD AND BANNER acted as pall bearers.

Fred S. Ozier and Hattie A. Lowrey, both of this city, were married at the home of the bride's brother, Geo. H. Lowrey, West First Street, on last Friday evening.  Rev. G.W. Huddleston officiated.  Only the immediate relatives of the contracting parties were present.  The couple started on a trip to Chicago and other western points on the following evening.
