INDEPENDENCE

Calvin Tinkey came back from Columbus Tuesday.

J.L. Barr was at Mansfield last Friday on business.

Reuben Cramer visited his son, Daniel, at Lima last week.

James Allen, who has been so very sick, is still getting better.

Isaac Shanabarger, of near Newville, is numbered with the sick.

Mrs. Aaron Fitz, of Mansfield, has become insane and will have to be taken to the asylum.

Wm. Moss sold his Newville property and will move to Mansfield.

Geo. W. Cole, a well known citizen of Mansfield, died last Saturday morning, aged 57.

Frank Mix has been very sick with la grippe the past week, but is getting better now.

Henry Wheeler and Bert Mowry, of near Newville, are talking of going to California in March.

W.G. and F.H. Fike visited relatives, west of Bellville, over Sunday.

A nice little daughter was born to Mr. & Mrs. H.A. Pearce, at Mansfield, last Friday night.

Jacob Allen came in from Huntington, Ind., on Tuesday evening of this week, to see his sick father.

There is a brand new daughter at the home of Wm. Shoupe, near Newville.

Wm. Beemiller moved to 116 East Third Street, Mansfield, last Thursday.  He is going to follow teaming.

Harry Thomas was acquitted of the charge of taking Mrs. Zartman's gold watch before Mayor Mengert, last Wednesday night.

Elmer McDanel, who came in with Al Andrews from Garrett, Ind., is visiting friends in the neighborhood of Newville.

Sam Hettinger has just recovered from a very severe case of la grippe.  

Noble Calhoon and his brother Samuel, of Dublin, Washington County, Iowa, started on a visit among relatives near Pittsburgh, last Monday.

Napoleon Gates, formerly of this city, has been appointed postmaster at Althouse, Josephine County, Oregon.  "Nap" was a defeated candidate for County Clerk here on the Democratic ticket about two years ago.  He is a good fellow and it is not very astonishing that he could get a position from a Republican administration.  -- Daily Shield.

Thos. B. Andrews, second son of Al. Andrews, died at Garret, Ind., Wednesday evening of 29th. of spinal meningitis, aged 7 years, 9 months and 2 days.  Deceased was brought here for burial on Friday, accompanied by Nevada Walters, Alva McDanel and the parents and sister of the deceased, and the interment took place at the Independence Cemetery on same day.  The funeral was conducted by Rev. Grimsley, pastor of the M.P. Church. 

Martin Wallace is in from California.

The remains of the late Frank Myers, who died at the infirmary a short time ago, have been the cause of much trouble.  Chas. A. Parker, a representative of the medical college of the Ohio State University, came here and demanded the body, which was refused by Supt. Hunter, Friday night an attempt was made to steal the remains, but the persons were frightened away.  A close watch is kept over the grave each night.  -- Daily Shield of Monday.

Our old friend Jacob Spohn has taken unto himself a wife in the person of Miss Mary A. Stahl.  Success to you, Mr. & Mrs. Spohn.

J.D. Allen, of Blue Springs, Gauge County, Nebraska, is in seeing his sick father.  Dick looks real well and reports everything lovely out in his section of the country.  He arrived last Saturday morning.

BELLVILLE

K.H. Robinson has had a second round of la grippe.

Adam Earnst is down with a bad case of la grippe.

Mrs. M. Garber is able to be out again.

E.B. Brent is down with la grippe.

Will Lefever made a trip to Independence, Monday.

Miller Gatton was at Independence, Saturday.

Callie and Glenn Hoover, of Ashland, visited Mrs. Riblet recently.

F.A. Wolfe, one of the salesmen of the Wrought Iron Range Co., died at the Clifton House at 2 o'clock last Saturday afternoon.  His remains were taken to his late home in Indiana Saturday evening.
