INDEPENDENCE

Fred Moore, the operator, is numbered with the sick.

A little girl was born to Mr. & Mrs. John Reader, Thursday.

Cy Allen started for Michigan last Monday.

C.E. McBride and party, of Mansfield, will likely start for California this week.

Misses Pearl and Dell McLaughlin, of Mansfield, visited their folks here over Sunday.

Misses Clara and Nettie Buchanan left for Ashland last Tuesday morning.

Reuben Fike and wife, visited a few days in the vicinity of Mt. Vernon last week.

Born, to Mr. & Mrs. John Cates, Jr., Monday night, of last week, a son.

Miss Villa Brown went to Mansfield on Monday where she has procured a position as a domestic.

Old Jimmy Allen, as he is familiarly called, is still slowly improving in health.

Miss Clara Buchanan, of near Ashland, has been the guest of her folks at the Mansion House the past week.

Miss Aurilla Miller, is visiting her sister, Mrs. F.H. Halderman, near Johnsville, Morrow County, this week.

H.M. Simmons and wife will start for Republic City, Kans., on the 4th. of March, where they expect to make their future home.

Geo. Mitchell, an inmate of the infirmary, was literally ground to pieces by an Erie Train about noon Monday.

A log house belonging to Sam Gibson and but recently occupied by Cyrus Litt, two miles west of this place, burned to the ground about 8 o'clock Tuesday night.  Supposed work of an incendiary.

Mrs. Charlotte Levering, aged 91 years, a pioneer resident of Knox County, and an aunt of Hon. John C. Levering, died at her home near Waterford last Thursday. -- Mt. Vernon Banner.

The will of Philip Kick has been admitted to probate.  Witnesses, O.A. Hubbs and Michael Young.  Citation to Margaret Kick, widow, to make her election, and she agrees to take under the will.

C.L. McClellan, of this vicinity, who is attending the University at Ashland, is contemplating going to Chicago and instituting a Teachers' Co-Operative Association.  Success to him in his new venture.

We have just learned that our old friend Josh Fike is very sick and has been for the past five or six weeks.  We are sorry to hear this and shall hope to soon see him out again, for Josh is as full of fun as a dog is of fleas when in his usual health and a whole-souled jolly good fellow generally.

From the columns of the Shelby Free we learn that Edwin Mansfield, Francis Brucker and Fred S. Mickey have organized themselves into a company known as the Combination Clothes Rack Co. in the manufacture of clothes racks at that place and are already enjoying a rapidly growing trade.

Census enumerators always encounter a few individuals who decline to give the information asked for.  The law provides that the head of the family who refuses proper information may be sued and fine $50.  In the absence of the head of the family any adult member of it or "any agent of the family shall supply the information".

BELLVILLE

Rev. Austin Phillpot, is down with la grippe.

Frank Brent is the new clerk at Nelson's lunch counter.

A.G. Faust is now running the old Stump mill.

H. Farber is very low with la grippe.

Miss Geretta McKinney is very low with consumption and la grippe combined.

On last Friday, Wm. Hunter, had the misfortune to break his left wrist.

Mrs. Andrews, who died of la grippe, was buried on Thursday, at 2 p.m., at the Lexington Cemetery.

Miss Sarah Worner, living southwest of town, was given a pleasant surprise on last Saturday evening.

On last Saturday night a number of young folks met at the home of Miss Etta Greeg, on Ogle Street.  Among those present were H.L. McBee, John Long, Frank Cornwall, Jack Long and G.W. McBee.  The party was said to be a howling success.
