NATURALIZATION RECORDS

A FEW STATISTICS JOTTED DOWN FROM THE COURT JOURNALS

One day last week a reporter happened to run across an old record of naturalizations in the probate judge's office.  The records make an interesting study.  A few notes were taken on well known citizens whose names were found.  They are presented below.  The country from which each citizen came follows his name and the date of naturalization follows that.  The records of that early date were kept in such a disconnected way that it is almost impossible to find the names of all, and in the list published the names of many of our most prominent foreign born citizens do not appear.  To make this list as complete as possible the NEWS would be glad to receive cards from our older and substantial citizens whose names are not found in the list, so that the date of their naturalization may also be published.  Many of our best citizens, such as Mr. A. Kallmerten, Rev. L. Krebs and others equally well known were not naturalized in Mansfield and their names do not therefore appear.  Enough names are published, however, to show that very many of our best and most substantial citizens are foreign born.  The list contains other interesting things, such as the naturalization of a Chinaman in 1875:

** to Albany, NY in 1851;  to Mansfield in 1854;  naturalized at Sandusky, Ohio

± came to Mansfield in 1858, naturalized at Bucyrus (Ohio) in 1866

¶ came to Mansfield from St. Louis in 1864, came to New Orleans in 1850, naturalized at St. Louis in 1854

µ came to Mansfield, May 6, 1841
