Of the Newville families whose descendants have been successful in life, that of Daniel Carpenter is the most prominent.  His sons, George F. Carpenter and William B. Carpenter, reside in Mansfield.  The former is the well-known lawyer, bank president and capitalist;  the latter has retired, after years of a successful business career.  George F. Carpenter's eldest son, Reid, is the manager and principal owner of our street electric railway, and the younger son, Frank G. Carpenter, has a world-wide reputation as a journalist and author.  In addition to other works Frank is the author of a series of geographical readers that are used as text books in all the public schools of Ohio.  W.B. Carpenter's sons are also prominent and successful.  Alfred is a lawyer of note at Cleveland, Dr. Eugene Carpenter is superintendent of a state hospital at Columbus and a trustee of the state hospital at Massillon.  Otto Carpenter is examiner in the office of the state superintendent of insurance at Columbus.

The late Dr. J.P. Henderson, who settled in Newville in 1830, was the most prominent person in that locality for many years.  The doctor was a graduate of several eastern colleges, and had received the degree of A.M., as well as that of M.D.  His son, John, is a successful lawyer at Cleveland.

Miss Birdelle Switzer, formerly of Newville, has won an enviable position in the newspaper field, and is on the editorial staff of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
