Society Gossip of the Day

 

Miss Helen Marie Davis most delightfully entertained a number of her little friends at her home on Marion avenue this afternoon. The wee folk enjoyed themselves immensely and the occasion was in honor of the sixth anniversary of the hostess. The following composed the guests: Althea Johnson, Elizabeth Proctor, Geraldine Willis, Olive Baltzly, Eleanor Black, Charlotte Stark, Sarah Jameson, Martin Mulvihill, Marie Kuebler, Caroline Poe, Martha Palmer, Helen Hall, Ruth Donnell, Elizabeth Maguire, Aleta Clarke and Lucille Oberlin.

Mr. and Mrs. I. B. Norris entertained a number of friends at tea Friday evening at their home on Willow street.

Prof. D. C. Meek was at Shelby Thursday night in attendance at the wedding of Squire Alphonso B. Mabee and Miss Mary S. Craiglow. The Rev. J. B. McClay officiated. About 60 guests were present and a fine wedding supper was served. Mrs. Mabee is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Caiglow. The parents of the bride and their children who have married were married on the seventh of March and each year they celebrate their wedding anniversaries.

The Sunday school of the First Presbyterian church held a most enjoyable picnic in the social rooms of the church Friday evening. An elaborate supper was served at 6:30 o'clock in the manner of a midsummer picnic. The rooms were decorated with flags and bunting. After the repast Emmett Baxter, superintendent of the school, called the assemblage to order and a programme of literary productions was rendered. Mrs. Maude Reed was present and recited a couple of selections. Some recitations from the primary department were enjoyed and a number of songs by the school and Junior Endeavor were given. Dr. John Brister, secretary, called the roll and also gave the reports of the school. The entertainment closed at 9:30 o'clock.

Charles Orwig entertained a number of friends at cards last evening at his home on West First street. The honors were awarded to Clarence Angle and Miss Katherine Dirlam. A collation was served. The following composed the party: Eugene Reed, Edward Caldwell, Herman Kuebler, Charles Lemoine, Frank McCullough, Walter Jellin, Medary Stark, Clarence Angle, Seymour Cline, Gus Douglass and Misses Elise Roe, Beatrice Wolff, Marie Brumfield, Marguerite Hurst, Margery Bird, Martha Maxwell, Eleanor Douglass, Gertrude Orwig, Gertrude Abbott, Helen Feitz, Katherine Dirlam.

COMING AND GOING

A. E. Diesem has returned home from an extended southern tour.

Pearson Backensto, of Olivesburg, called on friends in the city Friday.

J. B. Leppo went to Chicago Friday night to attend the automobile show.

The Rev. W. O. S. Cliffe, of Lewis, Ia., is visiting his brother, E. T. S. Cliffe.

Miss Lottie Hunter is the guest of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. S. Hunter, of Greenwich.

Mrs. Mary McDermott, of Galion, is visiting E. S. Moser and family of South Main street.

Mr. and Mrs. G. R. Jesson, of North Main street, will be the guests of friends in Burbank Sunday.

Mrs. Amanda Miller and son, Ralph, were the guests of friends on West Fifth street Friday afternoon.

Mrs. J. O. Brown, of Massillon, is visiting her grandchildren, Misses Helen and Marie Endly, on East Fourth street.

Miss Dade Soles, of Ashland is visiting Miss Blanch McNary, on Bowman street.

Miss Mary Alice Dunham went to Galion this morning to spend several days with friends and relatives.

Mrs. F. R. Seager and Mrs. C. Laughlin, of Cleveland, are the guests of the latter's sister, Mrs. J. Fahs, on McPherson street.

Miss Grace Van Horne, who has been the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester Smith at the Buckingham, has returned to her home in Clyde.

Prof. George Crowell, who has been in the city for several days, was obliged to return to Ashland this morning on account of illness.

Mrs. Mahala Marshall, of North Main street, went to Corsica this morning, where she will spend several days as the guest of friends and relatives.

Mrs. Spidle, who has been visiting her daughter, Mrs. Charles Becker, corner of Flint street and Franklin avenue, returned to her home at Loudonville today.

G. A. Harwood, foreign sales agent for the Ohio Brass company, who has been spending several days in the city, has gone to Ontario, Can, to visit a couple of weeks.

P. T. Farland, who is at the head of H. L. Reed & Co.'s carpet department, has located in the Stevens property on Baldwin avenue, where he is removing his household goods.

Joseph Brannon and son, Allan, left last night for their home in Carson City, Mich., after spending five weeks with Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Keiser and other relatives of the city.

Mr. and Mrs. Collins W. Bushnell and son Earl have returned from a sojourn of a few weeks at Chicago where Mr. Bushnell was taking treatment. He is much improved in health.

Mrs. P. J. Guthrie, of Columbus, who has been visiting friends in the city for the past week, left for Boughtonville this morning where she will be the guest of her mother, Mrs. D. Stotes.

Owen L. Hull, who has been at Wheeling, W. Va., for some time, is here with his sister, Mrs. Lawrence Hendricks, whose husband has been ill for several months at their home on Crouse street.
